Support groups available for those affected by death due to overdose
VESTAL – As the drug addiction epidemic continues to grow both regionally and nationally, more and more people are left to grieve deaths related to opioid overdoses.
Lourdes Hospital will be offering support groups for children and adults alike who are mourning an opioid-related tragedy. The support groups will be separated by age, and will be led by certified social workers in an effort to help address the unique challenges and emotions associated with this type of grief and loss.
The support groups will begin on Tuesday, September 27, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Lourdes Hospice and will continue every Tuesday for six weeks. Lourdes Hospice is located at 4102 Old Vestal Road in Vestal, and registration is required. To register, call 607-584-3110.

On Wednesday, August 31, State Senator Fred Akshar (R) hosted a ‘Shed the Meds’ prescription medicine turn-in and narcan training event in Endicott, taking 343 pounds of prescription medication off the street. The Endicott Police Department estimated that approximately $150,000 to $180,000 worth of street valued medication was collected.
Last week, President Obama proclaimed September 18 – 24 to be Prescription Opioid and Heroin Epidemic Awareness Week. As part of the week, members of the President’s Cabinet and federal agencies will be focusing on the actions to be taken to address the national epidemic.
