“The staff and network of volunteers seek to help build a sense of community, to provide assistance locally through grants and donations, and to link people to services available in larger communities” said CCRS executive director Joanne Brown. “Space will be provided at the event for other agencies to meet with people locally, including WIC, Fidelis, and Office of the Aging, making these programs more accessible to our rural residents.”
Outreach programs organized by CCRS such as The Nearly New Shop, which offers clothing for the entire family at reasonable prices; a food pantry administration of the monthly Food Sense program through the Food Bank of Central New York ensure that residents in the far corners of Chenango and Cortland Counties have assess to service found in more urban areas.
Additionally, Brown says that CCRS provides assists area students and families with school supplies, with food and clothing items at Thanksgiving and Christmas and even with medical expenses and emergency needs as grants allow.
“The number of families and elderly needing assistance with food, transportation, utilities and housing in our often overlooked rural communities has increased in recent years,” said Brown. “These rising costs of these services puts an additional strain on available resources, which is why in order for all of our programs to function effectively we rely on much needed donations.
“The campaign will run from Sept. 24 – Jan. 2017, and each tax deductible donation will help us minister these resources to our communities. Said Brown. “Every donation will be greatly appreciated. There are also opportunities for community members looking to lend a helping hand to volunteer their time and talent; they just give us a call or visit and we will be happy to explore options to help.”
