NORWICH – The Norwich varsity girls tennis team would split matches to end out last week, when they suffered through a 6-1 drudging loss from Seton Catholic on Sept. 14, before hosting Susquehanna Valley and defeating them 6-1 on Sept. 15.
The Seton Catholic Saints improved their record to 7-0 following the win, effectively handing Norwich their first team loss in 2016.
“The Saints singles players Claire Loughlin and Nikki Crowley as well as doubles players Anna Korchak, Amanda Bucko, Iderase Ademoyo, Rusn a Dhillon, Imisi Ademoyo and Rose Kane remain undefeated for the season,” added Seton Catholic head coach Katie Loughlin.
In the loss for Norwich it was senior Makenzie Maynard who helped save the shutout with her lone win for the Tornado. Maynard would grind out the tough win over Alina Galyon in three sets. Dropping her first set at 2-6, before rebounding for a 7-5 and 6-4 win.
The following day on Sept. 15, Norwich would win in a landslide over Susquehanna Valley at 6-1. However, despite the final score, the match itself would remarkably be a much closer one than it would appear. Norwich would sweep the four singles spots, however, each of the four Norwich girls – Makenzie Maynard, Caroline Stewart, Samantha Gage and Cierra Sherman – would each have to see their matches extend to an extra set to earn their team point win respective wins of Maynard at 6-2, 1-6, 6-1; Stewart at 6-0, 7-6(7-2); Gage at 7-6(7-5), 6-2; and Sherman at 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

First and second doubles – Megan Burke and Brooke Steigerwald, and Riley Marsh and Ava Granquist – would each earn a team point for Norwich with their wins over The Sabers. Burke and Steigerwald would earn the win in two sets at 6-1, 6-1; before Marsh and Granquist would see extended action winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
“In a very close match Norwich remains sole first place in the Eastern division by beating visiting Sus. Valley 6-1,” said Norwich head coach John Stewart. “The score does not reflect how close this match was. Makenzie Maynard lead the charge gutting out another three set match to give Norwich its fourth point. Norwich ended up sweeping the singles with three of the four matches going three sets. Norwich's first doubles team won in straight sets easily winning 6-1, 6-1. While the second doubles team gave Norwich its sixth point winning the third set 6-2.”
Next up for Norwich (5-1) they will be on the road on Sept. 19, where they will travel to play Sidney at 3:30 p.m.
