Ericksen and Jeffrey lead the charge for the Tornado varsity cross country team

NORWICH – The Norwich varsity cross country has enjoyed some early successes in the 2016 season, on both the boys and girls side of the races.
• On Sept. 10, the Tornado boys and girls got their season underway when they traveled to Oneonta, for the annual Oneonta ‘Flash’ Forbes Invitational meet.
Ben Ericksen and Nicole Jeffrey have lead the charge for the Tornado runners thus far, as they both sparked their seasons early on with respectable runs.
The varsity course would see the Tornado runners maneuver an approximately 2.7 mile course consisting of hills, flats, grass, water, and small amount of blacktop.
Matt Goyden of Maine-Endwell would earn the top spot in the meet when he ran a 14:03.0 for the win on the boys side.
Norwich’s Ericksen would enjoy a fifth place finish to start 2016, when he managed a 15:04.9 on the course.
On the girls side Maine-Endwell would once again claim the top spot, as Ali Otis ran a 17:21.1. Jeffrey would see a sixth place finish for the Tornado girls when she finished the course with a 18:36.5.
Norwich would also see other athletes scratch out some solid performances: Marcus Cashman would finish 22nd with a time of 18:36.5, Nick Loscavio would finish 26th with a time of 16:36.1, Noah Bufalini would finish 35th with a time of 16:58.5, O’rian Slater would finish 38th with 17:03.9, Michael Cardoza finished 47th with a time of 18:24.3, and Jacob Russell would round out the Norwich boys with a 53rd place finish with a time of 19:06.7.
Although Jeffrey enjoyed the most success for the girls, Nicole Mikalunas would finish 44th on the girls side with a time of 26:49.2.
• Following the opening performance by the Tornado runners, they traveled over the hill to participate in the Tuesday Trot at Unadilla Valley where they would race across a 2.5 mile course on Sept. 13.
When all was said and done the Norwich boys would emerge in second place out of six teams. Once again for Norwich, Ben Ericksen lead the boys on the course, this time emerging as the top runner. Ericksen ran a 13:50 for his first, first place finish in 2016.
Following Ericksen in the standings was Nick Loscavio with a course time of 15:03 which landed him in eighth place overall. O’rion Slater would place 14th in the standings running a 16:14, followed by, Stanton Baker in 18th place with a 16:33, Mike Cardoza in 21st with a time of 17:05, Zayn Harper in 23rd with a time of 17:40, Kody Harrison in 26th with a time of 18:12, and Jacob Russell in 29th with a time of 18:37.
On the girls side of the course, Nicole Jeffrey lit up her competition, taking the overall win with her first, first place of 2016. Jeffrey would outrun her next closest runner by nearly a minute when she ran her winning time of 16:54.
Jeffrey was followed by her fellow Norwich runner Nicole Mikalunas who placed 30th on the day with her time of 25:10.
• Next up for the Tornado runners, they showcased their abilities when they traveled to Pheasant Hill Country Club in Owego, where they participated in the Owego Invitational, a 5k run on Sept. 17. This invitational would feature some of Section IVs top cross-country high school runners.
Remarkably Norwich would once again see Ericksen and Jeffrey perform at a high level, as both would earn the top spots for Norwich.
Ericksen would help his Norwich team earn a seventh place spot overall, when he himself ran a 17:45.4 12 placing him in twelfth place. Marcus Cashman would trail Ericksen in 39th place with a time of 18:54.1 39. Nick Loscavio and Noah Bufalini would each help earn Norwich some points when they ran 19:12.7 and 19:42.9 to land in 48th and 59th respectively. Rounding out the boys side was Stanton Baker, O’rion Slater and Michael Cardoza – running 20:29.2, 20:52.4, and 21:31 respectively.
On the girls side Nicole Jeffrey would surprise many with her exceptional run of the course when she place 17th overall with his time of 21:29.5.
Ericksen, Jeffrey and their fellow Tornado runners will head to Windsor with Norwich head coach Shaun Horan, for their fourth cross country meet of the season, on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
