UV recaptures New York Pizzeria Tournament title

UNADILLA – This past weekend on Friday, Sept 16. and Saturday, Sept. 17., the Unadilla Valley girls varsity soccer team hosted the New York Pizzeria Tournament.
UV would ultimately battle over the two-day tournament to reach and win in the championship game defeating Bainbridge-Guilford 2-0.
This four team tournament featured all Chenango County teams, including Oxford, Gilbertsville Mt. Upton, and Bainbridge-Guilford, as well as the host Unadilla Valley.
Friday's match-ups would feature a game where the Storm of UV played Oxford, while the Bobcats of BG would play GMU, all at 4:30 p.m. that day.
Unadilla Valley would earn a trip to the championship game on Saturday with a 1-0 win over the Blackhawks, while BG solidified themselves as a championship caliber squad when they downed GMU 4-0.
Oxford would go on to claim a third place finish in the tournament when they defeated GMU 1-0. Oxford and GMU would struggle with a stalemated first and second half ending at 0-0, before Dallas Beang of Oxford could bust open the matchup for a game winning goal in the overtime. Beang took her unassisted shot from just outside the right 18 yard line, scoring the game winner for the Blackhawks. The evenly skilled matchup would see each team record five shots on goal with Oxford seeing nine corners to GMU's six.
However, the difference would be in the net, where Alexis Kohlhepp would enjoy a perfect game saving three shots on goal, while the GMU goalkeeper would only manage two saves on the day.
The championship game would feature UV take on BG as they played on the stadium field, with UV successfully capturing the tournament title at 2-0.
With a halftime score of just 1-0, the sheer volume of shots from the UV squad – 16 shots on goal – would produce one additional goal for the home team. BG would see no shortage of offense, with 13 shots of their own, however, it was all-star goalkeeper Abbie Oglesby who would make the difference in the game as she would save 10.
In the net for the Bobcats, Megan Palmatier would enjoy a solid outing when she saved 11 shots from the UV strikers.
With the 2-0 win, UV reclaimed the title for the tournament in 2016. Notably for the Storm, goalkeeper Abbie Oglesby remains unscored upon, as she has not given up a score thus far in the 2016 season.
All-star team of the New York Pizzeria Tournament were: Unadilla Valley – Lanie White, Kirsten White, Jessica Smith, and Julia Oglesby. Bainbridge-Guilford – Molly O’Hara, Megan Palmatier, and Jillian Cannistra. Oxford – Dallas and Destiney Beang. And Gilbertsville Mt. Upton – Marenvon Zaczek, Vicky Prapaniotis. The tournament MVP was also named following completion on Saturday, with the award going to Unadilla Valley's Abbie Oglesby.
Next up: Unadilla Valley at Walton on Sept. 20, and at Milford on Sept. 22. Oxford at Sidney on Sept. 20, and at Delhi on Sept. 22. Bainbridge-Guilford will be home against Unatego on Sept. 20, and home against Sidney on Sept. 22.
“We would like to thank the pizzeria for sponsoring the tournament again this year,” said Unadilla Valley head coach Diane Hayes. “Betsey Baio and her granddaughter Sophia Baio were there to hand out the trophies for the tournament.”
