Norwich is looking for its fifth straight division title
SIDNEY – The dominate Norwich varsity girls tennis team has once again earned themselves a win in 2016 following their latest match against Sidney, where Norwich cruised to a 7-0 team win.
“Norwich continues on its path for a fifth straight division title easily beating Sidney 7-0,” said Norwich head coach John Stewart. “Norwich's four singles players gave up a combined seven games. While the doubles teams gave up no games.”
As coach Stewart alluded, the 7-0 victory would gain each Norwich girl another individual win on the season starting with first singles where Makenzie Maynard held down her top spot with a 6-2 and 6-0 victory over Anna Egli.
Caroline Stewart would reverse Maynard's score to win 6-0 and 6-2 against Sidney's Jillian Robinson at the second singles slot.
At third doubles Samantha Gage would give up no games in her dominating win over Hailey Hoag at 6-0 and 6-0.
And to complete the sweep of wins in straight sets for Norwich at the singles spots, Cierra Sherman would record her win over Remington Crandall, at 6-1 and 6-2.
Remarkably for the Tornado, the three doubles spots would also sweep Sidney, each defeating their opponents in straight sets.
First doubles saw Megan Burke and Brooke Steigerwald defeat Hailey Gopel and Corey Nordberg at 6-0 and 6-0.
Second doubles for Norwich – Riley Marsh and Ava Granquist – would continue the dominating trend, shutting out the Sidney duo of Mya Beards and Brianna Miner at 6-0 and 6-0.
Third doubles would complete the shut out trend for the Tornado, as Norwich's Natalie Bennati and Logan Fredenburg would receive forfeits for the seventh team point.
Up next for Norwich (6-1 overall, 3-0 league) they will travel south to face Chenango Valley on Wednesday, Sept. 21. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
