NMS teams up with Guernsey Memorial Library to launch Spelling Bee Club
NORWICH – Students in the greater Norwich region will now have the opportunity to benefit from free language enrichment services thanks to a collaboration between Norwich Middle School and Guernsey Memorial Library.
The newly founded Spelling Bee Club will gather in Guernsey Memorial Library's Resource Room beginning on October 6 from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., welcoming students of all school ages from around the area. The club will meet every Thursday evening until December 1.
“In small communities like ours, after-school resources for language skill development are limited,” said Norwich Middle School Principal Scott Ryan. “By partnering with our local community library, families can access, at no cost, a wealth of resources to learn now and in the future.”
Ryan went on to say, “There are students who are not in sports or music. For those who prefer academic enrichment, this is a new vehicle to meet friends and develop social confidence.”
The after-school education program will use games, special activities, and competitions to enrich students' language, spelling, and vocabulary.
NMS librarian Lorry Chwazik will be the connecting source between the school's resources and the public library. Chwazik is no stranger to spelling bee competitions as she leads the NMS annual spelling bee and even had the opportunity to attend the National Washington DC Scripps Spelling Bee competition in 2009 when her daughter Hayley Chwazik-Gee represented this region.
“Chenango County students compete at a very small regional event giving them leading advantage to qualify for the national competition,” said Chwazik. “It's rewarding to encourage our students' successes with both their academic performance at school and also fostering an opportunity to experience a once in a lifetime event.”
Guernsey Memorial Library Executive Director Connie Dalrymple has also expressed excitement about the brand new group.
“Our doors are open not only to Norwich school students, but to all students from any district or home school to come and enjoy reading and learning,” said Dalrymple.
Registration will be required for students interested in the Spelling Bee Club. Families interested in enrolling students can complete registration forms at Guernsey Memorial Library, or online at www.2016beeclub.webs.com.
