Chenango Forks claims title at seventh annual Greene boys soccer tournament

GREENE – The Trojans hosted their annual two-day, four team tournament this past weekend on Friday, Sept. 16 through the Saturday, Sept. 17.
Of the four teams in this years tournament – Greene, Afton, Sherburne-Earlville, and Chenango Forks – it was the Blue Devils of Chenango Forks who would walk off George G. Raymond turf field the ultimate champions on the day, after defeating Greene in the finals 4-3.
• Greene would advance to the finals of their own tournament, following a 4-0 win over Afton, which saw solid performances from Kevin Halsteter (two goals one assist), Spencer Klumpp (one goal), Nolan Scofield (one goal) Mike Repp (one assist) and Liam Reid (one assist).
Greene would simply out-power the Crimson Knights in the qualifying game as they tallied up 20 shots on goal and five corners to Afton's three shots on goal and just one corner.
In the net for both teams: Greene saw Ryan Lohsen record two saves, while Kevin Gyurik would see time as well having none. For Afton Nate Austin was kept busy from the Trojan strikers as he recorded 14 saves on the day.
• Following a 1-0 Chenango Forks win over Sherburne-Earlville that Friday, the Blue Devils would also advance for a showdown of two of the premiere Section IV teams for the championship game, which was to be played on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m.
No other statistics were reported on the Sherburne-Earlville verses Chenango Forks match.
Saturday would begin with the consolation round which featured the Marauders of S-E taking on the Crimson Knights of Afton.
Both teams wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, as roughly within 10 minutes into the game the score was already knotted 1-1.
“Owen Rodriguez (S-E) opened scoring with a laser shot to the upper corner 7 minutes in the game,” said Todd Dancesia the Afton head coach. “Mikey Graven-Briggs (Afton) responded three minutes later on a through pass from Jaymie Ticknor.”
With the game tied at one a piece, S-E would assume command of the game, dominating on the offensive end. The Marauders would see three additional strikes in the remainder of the the game, with two coming from Kyle Cole and another coming from Mitchell Doing. Notably, Cole would also have an assist on the day.
“Kyle Cole (S-E) was able to capitalize on two different loose balls in the second half to end the scoring,” said coach Dancesia.
S-E would earn 15 shots on goal and 10 corners compared to Afton's 12 shots on goal and just one corner.
In the net for both sides was Thad Karaman for Sherburne-Earlville who recorded five saves, while Afton's Nate Austin would tally up nine in the game.
Sherburne-Earlville (2-6 overall and 0-2 league) would take third in the Greene tournament, before they hosted Adirondack on Tuesday, Sept. 20. This game will be reported in Friday's Edition of The Evening Sun. S-E will play next on Saturday, Sept. 24, when they travel to Waterville. Afton (1-6) played Sidney on the road next on Wednesday, Sept. 21.
• Following the consolation game to decide that S-E would earn third and Afton a fourth place finish in this year's tournament, it was all Greene and Chenango Forks in the finals.
One simple point was all that separated the champion from the loser, as Greene would fall short of claiming their home title, losing 4-3.
An evenly paced game would see Greene's seven shots on goal only bested by one from the Blue Devils as they recorded eight. While corners for Chenango Forks would be five to Greene's one.
Even the saves made by each goalkeeper would be identical as Ryan Lohsen of Greene would grab four matching Luke Gaworecki of Chenango Forks.
Ultimately it was one well placed ball that decided the one-point win for the Blue Devils. In the win they saw Brad Wiley record two goals, Patrick Saroka with one goal and two assists, Shayne Bowersox with one goal, and David Puglisi with one assist.
For the home Trojans it was Spencer Klumpp who enjoyed the most success when he recorded two goals and one assist, followed by Mike Repp with one goal, and Bobby Mills with one assist.
Following the Blue Devils win, all-stars were named from each team at the tournament. Afton: Nate Austin, Riley Livermore. Sherburne-Earlville: Thad Karaman, Harrison DuBois. Greene: Kevin Halsteter, Spencer Klumpp, Brandon Whitaker, and River McCumiskey. Chenango Forks: Shayne Bowersox, Brad Wiley, Sean Lally, and Ethan Stocum.
Greene (5-1-1) played Delhi on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 20, before they enjoyed a nice break from action until they play again on Friday, Sept. 22, once again on the road against Walton. Games will be reported in later editions of The Evening Sun when they are made known.
