Hornets bombard the Saints for a 73 point, nine touchdown offensive explosion

BINGHAMTON – The Harpursville-Afton varsity football team is now an undefeated at 3-0, and now sits as the 8th ranked team in their class in New York State.
In a game that would see some one of the best rushing attacks (Harpursville-Afton) square off against one of Section IV's best quarterback to wide receiver combinations (Seton Catholic). It truly was a full offensive game.
The Hornets would travel to Binghamton to play Seton Catholic Central on Saturday, Sept. 17, where they would emerge victorious winning 73-32.
32 points of offense at the high school level would surely defeat many quality football programs, however, when Harpursville-Afton produces 634 total offensive yards – 462 of them rushing – the deadly Saint passing attack could not keep pace.
The Hornets would lead the Saints early in the first quarter of play at 22-0, seeing three rushing touchdowns from Tyler King in the first quarter (44 yards, 63 yards, and 14 yards).
Already up 22-0, the deadly passing attack of Seton's Dan Crowley to John Giangrieco for two consecutive receiving touchdowns would make for the looks of a classic showdown. Following the first quarter Harp-Afton would lead 22-12.
It was then that the game would truly extend beyond any point of competition as Harp-Afton would rain down 38 points in just the second quarter, while the Hornet defense would hold Seton to just 8 points.
King would grab his fourth touchdown in the game to start the landslide, followed by a eight yard Madison Hoover touchdown run, bother touchdowns were followed by Josh Wilson two point conversions.
The Saints would again see a Crowley to Giangrieco for a seven yard touchdown in their feeble attempt to keep pace.
The Hornets would have none of it, as they dominated the Saints on the road, handing them two more rushing touchdowns – Josh Wilson at 31 yards, and Madison Hoover at 63 yards. The Hornet defense would not be forgotten in the rout as jumped a passing attempt for an 83 yard interception return for a touchdown.
The first half of football would have the Hornets leading the Saints by an impressive margin at 60-20.
The third quarter of play would be no different for the Saints as they could only muster one score with a Crowley to Jaylin Ragsdale 12 yard connection for the score, with 8:25 left in the quarter.
It was then the Harpursville-Afton show once again, as quarterback Kin wheeled his way in from five yards out for a score, followed by a Mitch Weist rushing touchdown from 25 yards out.
The fourth quarter, already up 73-26, Harpursville-Afton would take their foot off the gas some, cruising their way to the victory.
Seton would see the last score on the day with another Crowley to Jaylin Ragsdale 12 yard connection for the final score.
In the win and leading the charge for the Hornets was Josh Wilson with 10 carries for 145 yards, and one touchdown, followed by Tyler King with nine carries for 133 yards, and five touchdowns, Madison Hoover with four carries for 82 yards, and two touchdowns, Mitch Weist with five carries for 53 yards, and one touchdown, Kevin Hubbard for one producing 22 yards, Kyle Grover with three carries for 18 yards, and KJ Ives with two carries for nine yards – producing the monster stat line of 34 carries for 462 rushing yards, and nine touchdowns.
Tyler King would also complete two passes of his three total for 117 yards as Mitchell Mertz would haul in both for the 117 yards receiving.
No individual statistics were reported for Seton Catholic.
However, in the win for the Hornets they did suffer through seven penalties and five fumbles, something they will hope to have addressed with the week of practice before they look to continue their dominate play.
Next up for Harpursville-Afton (3-0) they will host Sidney on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 1:30 p.m.
“I'm really proud of our team, and we're getting prepared for division rival Sidney,” said Hornet head coach Tim Petras.
