Man shares his journey to recovery

NORIWCH – John Maloney began his road to recovery at Norwich Rehab on May 8, 2016. He’s now been discharged, and is full of gratitude, hope and confidence.
Maloney sustained multiple injuries following a car accident that left him hospitalized for a lengthy period of time. He explained he didn’t think he would make it to recovery.
“I had no use of my left arm and loss of my right leg,” Maloney said. “My road to recovery began when I arrived at Norwich Rehab.”
Said Maloney, “It all started that day, when I was unable to sit up in bed or move for all that matter. The aides had to hoyer lift me to get me into bed. I have very limited accessibility and needed all the aide assistance I could get.”
Maloney continued, “My days became brighter with the start of therapy.”
He explained that he sat and pondered if he would be able to improve with the therapy. “It seemed so far away,” he said.
“From May 8, 2016 until now I never missed a single day of therapy,” said Maloney. “After a few weeks of them pushing me and me being dedicated I could start to see improvements. There was still a long road ahead.”
Maloney recalled, “I didn’t think I could stand up on my own, but after the first day that I did, I knew I could do it. Even if it was just for a few seconds, I was amazed.”
It’s been more than 200 days of recovery for Maloney, and he now has 75 percent use of his left arm, a prosthetic right leg, and is able to walk with a rolling walker.
“I can self-transfer,” Maloney added. “I’m doing all the things I once could on my own, from showering to using the bathroom all on my own.”
Maloney said he can do just about anything now.
“If it wasn’t for therapy at Norwich Rehab, I would still be lying in bed with no hope,” Maloney said. “It’s pretty amazing what the group of therapists at Norwich Rehab were able to do.”
Maloney has now been discharged and is at home where he said he is looking forward to getting his life back and becoming stable on his feet once again.
“I want to thank Norwich Rehab for giving me not only the confidence I needed to get better, but the strength. Never give up. It’s a long journey, but it is possible.”
