Tornado girls blast CV, sweep Warriors at home
NORWICH – Norwich proved to be the dominant force when Chenango Valley's varsity volleyball team came to town only to lose in three sets.
Despite the sweep for Norwich – which began with a 25-12 blowout win in the first set – Norwich saw the Warriors lash back in the second set.
Taking the set all the way to a 33-31 score, it was the Norwich girls who emerged victorious taking the 2-0 lead. With the wind taken from their sail, CV would attempt a late third set push was unable to manage the comeback, falling to Norwich in the final set 25-18.
Standouts in the game for Norwich were: Meghan Komendarek with two aces, 13 kills, and two blocks; Riley Strong had one ace, six kills, three digs, and six assists; Kara Evans had nine kills, and one block; Kalie Binelli had one ace, three kills, and three digs; Ripley Strong had six assists; Leahanne Humphrey had two aces, three assists, and one kill; Jazmine Rodriguez had two aces; while both Virginia Maiurano and Layla Burton each had three digs.
“Everyone had a chance to play tonight. Our first game we worked well and played our normal game. The second game we changed things maybe a little to much as you can see with the score but the younger team worked very hard to pull it off,” said Norwich head coach Shelly Alger.
In the loss for Chenango Valley, now 2-7 overall, they saw four key contributes: Bella LoVuolo with two aces; Tara Terpstra with eight kills; Stephanie Clapper with 10 assist, and eight digs; and Jenna Hanyon with one block.
Up next for the Tornado girls (6-3 overall) they will enjoy on day rest on Wednesday before they return to action on Thursday, Oct. 6, to once again treat their hometown crowd to a match when the Oneonta Yellowjackets come to town.
