Walton Warriors wreck the Bobcats
WALTON – The young Bobcat varsity football team of Bainbridge-Guilford traveled to Walton for what proved to be a convincing Walton victory when they tallied up nearly 500 yards rushing en route to a 36-22 win.
Bainbridge-Guilford saw improved play on both sides of the ball in the first half, as the young squad managed to hang with the Warriors – a team always known for their ferocious rushing attack and shutdown defense – as BG managed to play to a tied 6-6 ballgame heading into the halftime break.
Following a 0-0 first quarter, it was Walton who drew the first score in the game when Brooker took the ball in for the nine yard rushing strike with 12:00 left in the second quarter. Nearly 10-minutes of hard-nosed football later BGs Austin Carr took off from the quarterback position for the equalizing score from five yards out.
This halftime break would not prove beneficial to the Bobcats when all was said and done, as nearly all momentum they may have had heading into the half was drained away right out of the gates with the start of the third quarter.
The dangerous rushing attack of Walton – lead by Johnson who finished the day with 27 carries for 179 yards and two touchdowns – grabbed his first of the day in the third quarter when he found the end zone from three yards out – Steitz three yard two-point conversion good.
It took the Bobcats just over nine minutes to find the end zone again, when Evan Hyzer passed to Zack Ouimet for a 43 yard passing touchdown – rushing two-point conversion from Austin Carr.
14-14, that is where the score stood with the BG Bobcats hoping for their first win in 2016.
Walton had other plans, after a 69 yard rushing strike by Steitz, set the Warriors off for a 22-point explosion on the Bobcats.
With a consolation touchdown for BG, who was already down 36-14 with just 3:15 left in the game, Austin Carr connected for the second time with Ouimet, this time for a 31 yard strike – Ben Bivar tacked on a two-point conversion.
Although Bainbridge-Guilford managed 180 yards and two passing touchdowns in the game – Evan Hyzer 3-4 106 yards one touchdown, Austin Carr 7-12 74 yards one touchdown – and receiver Ouimet had a monster 5-5 for 151 yards and two touchdowns receiving.
The Bobcats could simply not compete with the Walton rushing attack who racked up 67 carries for 448 yards and five rushing touchdowns. This attack was lead by a four headed monster with Johnson finishing with 27 carries for 179 yards and two touchdowns, Steitz with 12 carries for 130 rushing yards and one touchdown, VanValkenburg with just four carries and 65 rushing yards for one touchdown, and Brooker with 14 carries for 51 yards and one touchdown.
Leading the Bobcats in rushing for yet another week is senior Austin Carr – 15 carries for 90 rushing yards – as he was successfully the only BG runner to even record a positive rushing yardage total. On the defensive side of the ball, BG was lead in tackles by Ben Bivar with nine, Carr with nine, and Adam Ives with seven.
Following yet another touch loss, Bainbridge-Guilford (0-5) will get yet another chance for a win as they travel to New Berlin, for a Chenango County matchup against the 0-5 Unadilla Valley Storm. The game is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 7, and is set to begin at 7 p.m.
