Visiting Yellowjackets sting Norwich in 3-0 loss at home
NORWICH – The Norwich varsity volleyball team was looking to continue their successes in 2016 with a hopeful win over Oneonta, however, the defensive play from the lady Yellowjackets proved just enough to upturn Norwich for a 3-0 win.
In what simply was a close matchup – despite the 3-0 final score – Norwich simply could not climb the mountain that was Oneonta, as they posted set losses of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-15.
“We did not play well tonight. Girls were not focused on the game. Oneonta came to play,” said Norwich head coach Shelly Alger. “They have some great athletes and they did great defending our offense.”
The Norwich offense, which usually proves dominate, met it's match during the matchup on Oct. 6, in a game that saw Layla Burton have four digs, Jazmin Rodriguez have one kill and three digs, Meg Komendarek had 14 kills and three blocks, Riley Strong had five assists, Kara Evans tacked on one kill, while Leahanne Humphrey had four assists, one block, and one dig, followed by Ripley Strong with two blocks and Alexis Taylor with one ace, two kills, and one additional dig on the night.
In the win for Oneonta Christina Mattocks and Alyza Kroll dominated the defensive side with 19 assists and 15 digs respectively. Mattocks and Kroll were followed by Alyssa Calhoun with eight kills, Laine Johnson with two blocks, and Jordan Johnson with three aces.
In the loss, Norwich will conclude their schedule for the weekend, before they return to the court traveling to Chenango Forks this coming Tuesday, before hosting Susquehanna Valley on Thursday. With the matches scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. respectively.
“We will need to regroup for next week for we are on the road to Chenango Forks on Tuesday and Sus. Valley here on Thursday,” said coach Alger.
