Greene Trojans join elite ranks; ranked ninth in Class D with win over Sidney

SIDNEY – The Trojans varsity football team came up big in another game of 2016 with a late half push for the 30-20 win over Sidney.
With Luke Erickson and Zach Orzell heading up the deadly rushing attack that the Trojans possess, the two combined for an astounding 240 yards off of 29 rushes in the matchup.
With a 0-0 after the first quarter, the defenses of both squads truly came to play this past Friday, Sept. 30.
Following a Sidney- Nate Vibbard 79 yard pass to Darren Smith, with an Ethan Finch two point conversion run – the Sidney Warriors opened the floodgates, something they could not stop.
Although already up 8-0, Greene responded in the third quarter, answering back with a 20 yard rush by Zach Orzell for the score – Coy Austin two point conversion run.
All tied up at 8-8 at the half, the slug fest continued as the third quarter played out to be the most beneficial in the Trojans win.
In what seemed like an exchange of touchdowns between the two teams late in the game, it was Greene who snuck in an additional strike in the third.
Greene opened the third quarter up with a 42 yard pass from Coy Austin to Orzell – Luke Erickson two point conversion. This was almost immediately answered off of Sidney's Vibbard 84 yard kickoff return for the score, drawing the game to a 16-16 tie. However, despite the exchanging of scores, Greene snuck in a two yard surge for the touchdown from Orzell late in the third to break the tie – Austin two point conversion run.
Starting the fourth quarter off was Greene's Justin Carman with a 12 yard rushing touchdown – failed point after kick.
Sidney would push back late in the game with a 15 yard pass from Alex Hoskins to Smith – two point conversion run failed. However, the push came too late as the back to back scores to end the third and open the fourth propelled the Trojans just far enough out of reach for them to sail to another victory on the season.
Greene would light up the ground attack again with a 54 carry performance going for 299 yards; while Sidney would only rush 19 times for 62 yards. Of those 299 yards on the ground, Luke Erickson would claim 25 carries for 150 yards, with Zach Orzell having 14 for 90 yards.
Sidney would look to the sky for their attack as their quarterback, Darren Smith, recorded a solid day going 14-for-29, with 200 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Greene's Zach Orzell finished 1-for-5, for 42 yards, and one touchdown through the air with no interceptions.
Following the late push in the game Greene (4-1) is now ranked number nine in New York State Class D teams. Greene will look to improve on their 4-1 record when the high flying Saints of Seton Catholic come to Greene for a divisional clash. The game is set to begin later on this evening, Friday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. on the Trojans home turf field.
