Improved play from S-E leads to rematch win

SHERBURNE – The S-E varsity field hockey team pulled off a miraculous 2-0 win over Sauquoit Valley in a revenge game from an earlier season loss.
The rematch on Friday, Oct. 7, featured an improved S-E team that secured 10 shots on goal in the contest, adding 13 corners.
“Added pressure on the goalie after the initial shot,” said S-E head coach of the improved play in this game. “We were much more aggressive in the circle.”
Earlier in the season, the S-E girls lost a game to Sauquoit Valley in a landslide at 4-0, however, this time around with an improved defensive effort as well, S-E held their visitors to 0-0 halftime score.
“High praise to the midfield and defense for controlling that end of the field, allowing them only one shot and three corners,” said coach Cooman.
Scoring in the second half of play with 23:47 left in the half was Alexa Bates, who was assisted by Kaley Judge. Following Bates score, Rebecca Turner tacked on the safety score, also off an assist from Judge, taking the lead to 2-0 with just 2:16 left in the game.
In goal for S-E was Lexie Jordan who made the lone save for the lady Marauders; while Ali Soma of Sauquoit Valley recorded eight saves in the game.
Next up for Sherburne-Earlville (2-12 overall) they will be home against Clinton on Wednesday, Oct. 12, for their senior recognition night. The game is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. following the senior ceremony.
