Senators announce funding for bulletproof vests, NPD and CCSO to reap benefits
CHENANGO COUNTY – On Friday, October 7, U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced $808,198.45 in new federal funding for the State of New York to purchase 13,005 bullet proof vests for police officers across 192 jurisdictions.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office are set to receive 15 of these bullet proof vests, and the City of Norwich Police Department will receive 13.
The funding was allocated through the DOJ's Bureau of Justice Assistance Bulletproof Vest Partnership program.
Chenango County Sheriff Ernest R. Cutting Jr. noted that this grant is a renewal of previous grants awarded to law enforcement. “It enables us to supply officers with the necessary safety equipment as they work hard everyday to ensure the public safety expected by our citizens,” said Sheriff Cutting. “We are committed to public safety in Chenango County.”
“With a tightening budget, the department is hard-pressed to find money for new equipment,” said Norwich Police Chief Rodney Marsh. “A single vest can range in cost from $700 to $800 dollars each. This grant will help offset some of the costs of replacing the officer’s vests. Having safe, up-to-date body armor provides an important layer of protection for the officers.”
Senator Schumer said, “This massive federal investment will ensure that the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe are equipped with the life-saving gear they need to protect themselves. With over 13,000 new bullet proof vests, officers and other law enforcement officials across New York can feel safer while they're out on the beat keeping our communities safe.”
Senator Gillibrand added, “This federal funding for new vests is welcome news for New York's police officers, who put their lives on the line every day to keep up safe. In a dangerous situation, a bulletproof vest might be the only barrier between life and death for an officer.”
