Area fire departments to hold open houses this week

CHENANGO COUNTY – In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, area fire departments will be holding open houses in an effort to raise awareness around fire prevention.
The Norwich Fire Department is holding an open house this Thursday, October 13, beginning at 6 p.m., and the Sherburne Fire Department will host an open house on Friday, October 14, at 6 p.m.
Both events will include displays, activities, as well as fire prevention materials available for anyone in the public.
The Chenango County Bureau of Fire strongly urges that people take advantage of the available information at the open houses to help keep their families safe.
Chenango County Fire Coordinator Mike Beckwith also issued this reminder:
“We strongly recommend all residents make sure they have a working smoke and CO2 detector on every floor of their home,” said Beckwith. “These devices should be tested once a month and batteries changed at least twice a year. When you change your clocks in the fall and spring is a handy reminder.”
Beckwith went on to say that residents should practice a home escape drill and coordinate a meeting place so everyone knows how to get out quickly and where to go in the event of a fire.
