Norwich golf dwindles at STAC championships, looks forward to states

ITHACA – Norwich varsity golf fielded a hopeful six individuals when they traveled to Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University, however, a rough course and bad outings by the team sent them plummeting in the standings when it was said and done.
“They just didn't play well,” said Norwich head coach Dave Branham before alluding to having some individuals qualifying for the Section IV state team this coming May 2017.
In the team standings out of the six eligible teams present, Norwich – despite a down day – finished fourth overall with a team score of 431. Winning the STAC tournament team title this year was Susquehanna Valley, a team Norwich split with in the regular season.
On the individual side of the championship, Norwich managed to have two golfers finish inside the top 10, however, not as high inside the top golfers as expected.
Senior Ryan Johnson shot a 81 on the 18 hole 72 par course, which place him in a five way tie for fifth place. Sophomore Alex Gage also finished in the tie-breaker at 81 strokes.
“Just a bad day on the golf course. We have to learn from our experiences. All good players have bad days and great players are sometimes measured by their bad days. I will remind the seniors of this day and looking forward to next May,” said coach Branham.
Notably, this coming May, the New York State tournament for high school golf will be held.
Norwich individual finishes: Ryan Johnson 81, Alex Gage 81, Brenon Maynard 83, Griffin Clipston 92, A.J. Little 94, and Nate Scheer 98.
