Norwich Tennis falls in STAC semi-finals

BINGHAMTON – The high powered Norwich girls varsity tennis team met their match when they faced off against Horseheads in the STAC Semi-final's match.
The matchup took place at Recreation Park, on Tuesday, Oct. 11, to which Norwich fell to Horseheads 6-1 on the day, ending their regular season.
“We played them tough we had our chances but we were just a little off today,” said Norwich head coach John Stewart.
The rust from an eight day stretch of no live action for Norwich – last played Chenango Forks eight days prior – simply caught up to Norwich.
“I felt our timing on our shots were a little off today. We had very good match play from every position but could not win the big points,” said coach Stewart.
Norwich's lone win in the contest came from Caroline Stewart at second singles. Stewart defeated Mackenzie Hyde in three sets at 6-2, 4-6, and 6-4.
At first singles Norwich's Makenzie Maynard fell victim to Tatum Benesh at 6-1, and 6-1.
Third singles saw Norwich's Samantha Gage drop two sets to Alaina Strife at 6-3 and 7-5.
Fourth singles Cierra Sherman dropped two sets to Rachel Dickson at 6-1 and 6-1.
The first doubles duo of Megan Burke and Brooke Steigerwald dropped their match to Rachel Brennen and Catherine Omara at 6-3 and 7-5.
Second doubles for Norwich, Ava Granquist and Olivia Granquist lost in three sets at 4-6, 6-4, before falling victim at 10-8 to Angelique Lapitan and Joanne Kim.
Third doubles of Riley Marsh and Natalie Bennati of Norwich finished off the day for the Tornado with a loss at 6-1, and 6-4 to Isabella Carberry and Julia Strife.
Coach Stewart explained that despite many of the scores being lopsided, Norwich truly did grind in their attempt for the win. Third doubles played seven games with five going to deuce points, however, coming up short Norwich fell in the set at 6-1.
“That is a close set but the score doesn’t reflect it. And that was the case with most of the matches today,” said coach Stewart.
Norwich begins their sectional play on Thursday.
In the Sectional tournament this year, Norwich has the number one seed in doubles with Caroline Stewart and Makenzie Maynard and also the number two seed of Brooke Steigerwald and Megan Burke.
In singles Samantha Gage and Cierra Sherman are the Norwich entries.
Play begins at 9 a.m. at Tioga Hills in Vestal, on Oct. 13.
The STAC Final between Horseheads and Seton Catholic will be played on Monday, Oct. 17, at Recreation Park at 3 p.m.
