Oxford Lions Club boasts commitment to commuinty through highway cleanup

OXFORD – It’s a task that can easily and often be overlooked, not to mention dangerous–but if not for a handful of generous volunteers donating hours of their free time through organizations like the Oxford Lions Club, trash and litter strewn about our community highways would be left unchecked.
Recently, the Oxford Lions Club got together to combat the careless deposits of litterbugs along their adopted stretch of State highway 12 in the town of Oxford. With their “We serve” motto in mind and at the fore of the semi-annual roadside clean up project, the Lions proved their worth, humbly picking up for everyone’s enjoyment much as they have for more than two decades.
Back in the late 1980’s, like many states, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) suffered from a declining work force and a reduced operating budget. They implemented a clever program that started in Texas, where individuals or organizations could “adopt” a section of highway for roadside beautification or other aesthetic-related activities. Legislation formalized the Adopt-A-Highway program in 1990, and the Oxford Lions joined shortly thereafter.
The Oxford Lions adopted a section of NYS Route 12 from County Road 4 to County Road 3. Two times a year, usually in June and October, they get about ten participants out for an hour on a Sunday morning starting at 8:00 a.m. The DOT outfits the adopters with the appropriate yellow/orange safety gear and provides trash bags.
Most recently the Oxford Lions were out taking care of their roadway on Sunday morning, October 9. Volunteers that day were Kevin Catheron, Carol Kuhn, John Weidman, Ken Paul, Stacie Edick, and John Knapp. Carol, who chairs the Adopt-A-Highway committee modestly stated, “This part of the highway is never too dirty, as we only picked up seven bags of garbage.” If not for their efforts, all that refuse would be scattered about, detracting from the beauty of the wild flowers, clean curbs, and the country charm that passers by see in just a few minutes at highway speeds.
The Lions participation in the Adopt-A-Highway program has fostered a sense of community ownership of the roadway as well as a sense of pride in its appearance.
