A must win game

SHERBURNE – The Sherburne-Earlville varsity football team is coming off a long grueling week of practice, following their devastating loss to division leading Canastota, at 45-13.
The matchup last Friday, Oct. 7, at home marked S-E's senior night celebration where they recognized their six graduating seniors: Sam Tuttle, Tyler White, Brandon Warren, Connor Scott, Joseph Purdy, and Matthew Hull.
At 20-13 at the half, down just one touchdown to undefeated, number three ranked in New York State Canastota S-E was in striking distance last Friday of handing their divisional rival their first loss.
However, spoiling their senior night Canastota returned to state ranked form and poured on 25 second half points for the dominating win.
In the loss S-E's quarterback, Gabe Irwin, went 6-16 for 88 yards passing and one touchdown, with one interception. On the ground and without star running-back Matt Hull, The Marauders went to a committee of rushers with Lincoln Owen leading the way off of 12 carries for 69 yards. Owen was followed by Jessey Lynch when went 13 for 56 yards; Joe Purdy who went 3 for 32 yards; Vinny Albertina 7 for 30 yards; Hunter Zdbyniewski 5 for 28 yards; Cody Beckwith 3 for 14; and Gabe Irwin 2 for 12 yards – for a total of 48 rushes in the loss for 241 yards.
Receiving on the day for S-E saw Dawson Lagoe finish with three catches for 47 yards; Joe Purdy caught two for 26 yards and Lincoln Owen added one catch for 15 yards.
Now faced with a make or break game, head coach Ed Holmquist has been working his athletes in preparation for their final regular season game.
“Win and we're in, it's must win,” said coach Holmquist. “Boys are working hard and preparing against a good Holland-Patent team.”
Sherburne-Earlville (3-3 overall, 3-2 league) will be on the road this Saturday, Oct. 15, when they travel to division rival Holland-Patent (3-3 overall, 3-2 league).
Notably, Holland-Patent is coming off a 34-22 loss to Altmar-Parish-Williamstown last weekend – a game that featured a 34-0 score until the Golden Knights attempted a late fourth quarter push scoring all 22 points.
Currently, Sherburne-Earlville sits at fourth in the divisional C Southeast standings – behind 6-0 Canastota, 5-1 Little Falls, and 3-3 Holland-Patent. If the Marauders come home with a win this coming Saturday they will move to 4-3 on the season ensuring a post-season berth.
