Tornado earns win over the Storm as both prepare for postseason play
NORWICH – In a non-league friendly matchup to help their respective athletes stay sharp for the upcoming postseason sectional play, the Norwich Tornado and Unadilla Valley Storm volleyball teams squared off with Norwich emerging as the the 3-0 victors.
The game was played in Norwich on Oct. 27, as the ladies of UV attempted to crack into the ranks of Norwich a fellow Chenango County volleyball team, yet a Class B team – UV plays at the Class D level.
However, despite the the respective records, Norwich claimed the 3-0 victory on the day with set wins of 25-17, 25-13, and 25-11.
For the Tornado in their win, Meghan Komendarek had 12 kills, two blocks, and one dig; Riley Strong six assists, one kill, and two digs; Kara Evans two aces, three kills, one block and two digs; Kalie Binelli four aces, three kills, and two digs; Leahanne Humphrey five aces, three assists, and two kills; Layla Burton four digs; Kalie Fleming two assists and one dig; Virginia Mauriano two digs; and Alexis Taylor one ace, two kills, and four digs.
In the loss, UV was led by Keana Schrag who notched up 12 digs; followed by Bailey Miller with six aces; Megan Carpenter with three assists; and Gina DelSontro with two kills.
Notably, the above statistics are based on the first three games played that evening. Norwich and Unadilla Valley did elect to play two extra games – resulting in Norwich wins of 25-13 and 25-11 – in order to truly help prepare both teams for their upcoming games in their respective Section IV tournaments this week.
Norwich (9-5 overall) is the third seed going into the Section IV Class B tournament, where they are scheduled to play Dryden (12-5 overall, sixth seed) at Norwich on Nov. 1, at 5:30 p.m.
Unadilla Valley (11-4 overall) is the first seed in the Section IV Class D tournament, and therefore draws a bye in the first round of play. UV will then play the winner of Candor (8-9 overall) or Hancock (6-7 overall) at Unadilla Valley on Nov. 3, at 4:30 p.m.
