Bail set at $1 million cash for alleged murderer

NORWICH — Jeremy P. Coates, 46, of Norwich appeared at the Chenango County Court Monday, Oct 31 to be arraigned for his alleged involvement the death of David Green, 58, in the Town of Oxford.
Chenango County Judge Frank B. Revoir Jr. began the hearing by stating the six felony counts against Coates.
The first count being murder in the first degree is a class A felony, section 125.27 of the penal law subdivision 1A7, which reads, “The victim was killed while the defendant was in the course of committing or attempting to commit and in furtherance of robbery.”
Murder in the second degree, section 125.25 subdivision 1 which reads, “A person is guilty of murder in the second degree when with intent to cause the death of another person, he causes the death of such person.”
Coates also faces an additional count of murder in the second degree, section 125.25 subdivision 3 which reads, “A person is guilty of murder in the second degree when acting alone or with one or more other persons.”
The fourth count Coates faces is robbery in the first degree, section 160.15 of the penal law, subdivision 3 which reads, “A person is guilty of robbery when he forcibly uses or threatens the immediate use of dangerous instrument.” This charge is considered a class B felony.
In addition to the top counts, Coates faces two more counts of assault in the first degree, section 120.10 subdivision 1 which reads, “A person is guilty of assault in the first degree when with intent to cause serious physical injury to another person, he causes such injury to such a person or to a third person by means of deadly weapon or a dangerous instrument.” Under the same section subdivision 4, “...a person is guilty of assault when participants if there are any, cause serious physical injury to a person other than one of the participants.”
Both assaults in the first degree are considered class B felonies.
With Coates facing six felony accounts and having a prior criminal record, bail has been set at $1 million cash and $5 million property bond.
Coates remains in custody at the local jail until his next court appearance.
