Hornet ladies advance after frightful rally for fifth set win
HARPURSVILLE – The Harpursville Hornets will now advance to the quarterfinals of the Class C Section IV tournament after defeated Union Springs 3-2.
Officially kicking of sectional play in the high school varsity volleyball realm, the Harpursville Hornets hosted Union Springs on Halloween night, Oct. 31.
The matchup proved just as nail-biting as the holiday it was played on, going down to the final set on the night to decide which team would continue on in the postseason play, and which team would be sent home.
Union Springs took command of the match with their first set with of 25-21. However, Harpursville answered back quickly with a dominating 25-15 set to even the score at 1-1. The next two sets were also split between the teams – Union Springs won the third set 25-19, Harpursville won the fourth set 25-15.
With the game and the 2016 season riding on just one set, the Hornets swarmed together for a 25-17 rallying win over Union Springs to earn the right to advance to the quarterfinals.
Union Springs (6-9 overall) provided no statistics for their side. Harpursville enjoyed a solid night from: Chloe Dodd who had four aces, Amanda Greenwood who had four aces, 21 Kills, and two blocks, Tienna Avery who racked up 32 assists, and Emma Davis who had nine digs.
With the stellar 3-2 win for the Hornets (10-3 overall), they will now advance to the Section IV Class C quarterfinals to face number two ranked Trumansburg (16-0). The game will be played in Trumansburg on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 5:30 p.m.
Notably, there will be two other Chenango County teams playing in sectionals later on this evening. Norwich hosts Dryden at 5:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Section IV Class B tournament; while Bainbridge-Guilford will host Moravia/Walton at 5:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Section Class C tournament.
