NORWICH – A man accused of stealing electronics from an area business changed his plea to guilty in court Monday, Oct. 31, and will serve five years of probation.
Thomas J. Mulverhill entered a plea of guilty to the charge of burglary in the third degree, and was subsequentially sentenced to five year probation.
On June 8, 2015, Mulverhill and a co-defendant unlawfully entered a local business with two coolers and proceeded to the electrics department. Mulverhill was then arrested at a later date in Broome County on other charges, while having warrant for his arrest in Chenango County.
Chenango County Judge Frank B. Revoir Jr. stated the class D charge against Mulverhill from 2015 and acknowledged the jail time that the defendant has already served. However, Mulverhill will still have to complete the five years probation and pay back thousands of dollars in restitution and legal fees.
After Mulverhill accepted the terms to his sentencing, Public Defender John Cameron said that Mulverhill, “Has suffered a long term addiction to opiates.” Cameron said the consequence of this addiction was that it has caused the defendant to take a criminal path in life. However, now Mulverhill has the opportunity now to change.
Assistant District Attorney Michael D. Ferrarese agreed with Cameron on the fact at this young man now has the ability to change his life though rehabilitation and with proper counseling for this addiction. Ferrarse also said that Mulverhill has the chance to live a “crime-free life.”
