Trumansburg tops Hornets in sectional play
TRAMANSBURG – The Harpursville-Afton Hornets were coming hot off a tough fought 3-2 win over Union Springs when they were then faced with second-seeded Trumansburg, to which they subsequently lost by 3-0.
This Section IV Class C quarterfinal match was somewhat closer that the final 3-0 score portrays, as the Hornets were able to climb to double digits in each of the three sets.
However, despite some solid play from the Hornets they were jettisoned from sectionals after dropping three sets – first set 25-14, second set 25-14, third and final set 25-19.
In the loss for the Hornets, Tienna Avery had 13 assists, and six digs; Amanda Greenwood had nine kills, two blocks and six digs; Carelyn Decker had one ace; Chloe Todd had one ace, and six digs; while Emma Davis added two blocks.
Trumansburg boasted four standouts: Zoe Golden with 22 assists; Brilynn Winkleblack with nine kills; Kateyn Artibee with eight aces; and Meredith Stilwell with 11 digs.
In the loss Harpursville-Afton concludes their 2016 season 10-4 overall record. Trumansburg will now advance to the semifinals of the Section IV Class C tournament.
The four semifinalist's left in the tournament are: first-seeded Tioga, second-seeded Trumansburg, third-seeded Bainbridge-Guilford, and fourth-seeded Watkins Glen.
These semifinalists will advance to Tioga on Thursday, Nov. 3, for the semifinal pool-play round, starting at 4:30 p.m. The top-two teams who emerge from the pool-play will advance to the championship which will be held in Corning on Nov. 5, at 6:30 p.m.
