SHERBURNE – On Saturday, Oct. 29, eleven members of the Chenango County's Habitat for Humanity gathered in the town of Sherburne to continue their progress on building a family home.
The eleven members that volunteered their time and services participated in shoveling and leveling gravel into the foundation, laying out insulating foam sheets, covering those with plastic sheeting to deter the movement of moisture and radon, placing another layer of insulating sheets at right angles to the layer below, and then installing wire mesh. As a final step to their project a plastic tubing for the radiant heating system was attached to the mesh.
Habitat for Humanity is an international nonprofit organization that helps in the process of building “simple, decent, affordable housing” for people in need. Local volunteer services like the one in Chenango County, builds a partnership with those families in need of a home.
What this means is that the family must contribute approximately 350 hours of labor to the completion of the house and must repay a no-interest mortgage. Those repayments toward the Habitat affiliation allows additional families the same opportunity.
In addition, the crew would like to extend special thanks this week to Lauren Eldridge and ‘Pizza Man Charlie’ at Nina’s Italian Grill for providing lunch.
Habitat for Humanity continues to look for volunteers to help with the project.
Anyone interested can contact Site Supervisor, Dave Wright, at Chenango.habitat@gmail.com or may call Habitat for Humanity Office Manager, Sandy Colton at 334-7492.
