Volunteer crews prepare for framing at Habitat House
SHERBURNE – Habitat volunteers spent two work days this week at the Shawler Brook Road site in the Town of Sherburne finishing tasks that had to be completed before house framing can begin, including pouring and leveling the slab, creating pads for porch columns, laying sill plates, and building headers for windows and doors. Framing the structure will begin immediately.
The volunteers’ intent is to close in the structure before the worst of the winter weather begins. Habitat is an international, non-profit organization dedicated to building “simple, decent, affordable homes” for people in need. Chenango County Habitat receives no government funds and has no paid staff. Work on sites in support of building are done by volunteers.
Carlos Castaneda, an American author, once said, “we either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves strong – the amount of work is the same.”
All revenues are raised through donations, and fundraisers and are used to build or repair homes for Habitat partner families. The building costs are repaid to Habitat through no-interest mortgages.
The worksite volunteers would like to offer their sincerest thanks to Beverly Clark of the Sherburne Community Lunch Welcome Center for providing a lunch to the crew this past Saturday, Nov. 12.
Anyone interested in volunteering or donating to their cause can contact Site Supervisor, Dave Wright at Chenango.habitat@gmail.com or Office Manager, Sandy Colton at 334-7492.
