Senator Akshar commends Cuomo's addiction recovery funding

BINGHAMTON – On Wednesday, December 14, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced $1.75 million in funding to support five new Recovery Community and Outreach Centers in communities in Central New York, the Southern Tier, and New York City. Of the $1.75 million, $350,000 will be annually allocated to Fairview Recovery Services, Inc. located in Binghamton.
New York State Senator Fred Akshar of the 52nd District commended Gov. Cuomo on the funding awarded to Fairview Recovery Services, stating, “I applaud the Governor and the Office of Alcoholism and and Substance Abuse Services for awarding $350,000 in funding for addiction recovery services in our Southern Tier community. I'm confident that Fairview Recovery Services will put these resources to good use and provide more quality recovery and treatment services for those in our community who so desperately need it.”
The effort will bring the total number of recovery centers in the state up to 14, with one in every state economic development zone.
The five centers to receive funding are in addition to the six centers Gov. Cuomo announced in June 2016 and three already operational NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services funded recovery centers in Oneonta, Rochester, and Brooklyn.
“Addiction devastates the lives of too many New Yorkers and their families, but recovery from addiction is attainable with the right support,” said Gov. Cuomo. “New Yorkers in every part of the state will now have the recovery-focused resources and support they need to make their recovery possible.”
It is reported that the Recovery Community and Outreach Centers will provide a community-based, non-clinical setting that is safe, welcoming and alcohol/drug-free for any member of the community. Each recovery center will respond to the local area’s specific needs related to obtaining substance abuse treatment services and addiction recovery supports.
The centers will promote long-term recovery through skill building, recreation, wellness education, employment readiness, civic restoration opportunities, and other social activities. Services will be accessible not only during the daytime hours, but also during evening and weekends, to meet the needs of individuals and families who may be in need of assistance at varying hours.
If you or a loved one is struggling with an addiction, additional resources are available by calling the State's toll-free 'HOPEline' at 1-877-8-HOPENY (1-877-846-7369) or by texting HOPENY.
