Second half surge lifts Trojans over the visiting Black Knights
GREENE – The girls varsity basketball team is Greene played host to Windsor – both struggling early before a resilient Greene team pulled away in the later stages for the close 36-29 victory.
The matchup played in Greene on Dec. 19, was a tale of two-halves for the lady Trojans who appeared to be playing flat to open up the game, as they trailed 14-11, only scoring three points in the second period.
The halftime break served the lady Trojans well, as they were able to step back from the game, regroup and explode in the third period for a game high 15 points to take the second half lead heading into the fourth period at 26-20.
“We were very active on defense after the first quarter and we were more deliberate on offense,” said Greene head coach Dave Gorton. “We shot 10-17 in the second half and we had 8 assists in the second half.”
Leading the surge for the lady Trojans was Emma Smith who netted 12 points on the day – spacing her scoring out to six first and six second half points. To go with her 12 points on the day, Smith also grabbed 12 rebounds in the game, which was notably coupled with Greene's McKenna Sergi's six assists.
Despite the loss, Windsor's Brittany Kay scored a game high of 13 points – six coming in the first half and seven in the second half.
“Everyone on the team contributed either rebounds or assists,” said Gorton of his team's production.
Greene now (2-2 overall) will next host Oxford this coming Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 7:15 p.m.
