Red Devils spoil Christmas, hand state ranked Norwich their first loss

NORWICH – Vernon-Veron-Sherrill came to Norwich Thursday afternoon, only to drop 23 fourth period points to hand Norwich their first loss on the season – who was ranked fourth in the state for class B on Dec. 20, by the New York Sports Writers Association – VVS would pull ahead late in the close game to win 64-52.
The game on Dec. 22, could not have been closer in the first three periods of play, as the Tornado trailed by just two points heading into the final period – down 41-39, following VVS scoring one more than Norwich in the second and third period's.
Norwich who seemed to be keeping pace with the Red Devils would see only five athletes score on the night, as Tre Bonham led the team with 23 points. Bonham would prove the most effective throughout the game including the fourth period where he scored a team high eight points.
The difference in the fourth which gave VVS the edge was the usefulness of their roster as five players scored in the fourth period – while they also managed to go 20-24 from the free throw line in the game – 6-6 from that mark in the fourth period.
VVS was led by Davey Moffett who matched Bonham's production at 23 points, however, Moffett had an accomplice in the scoring for the Red Devils as Dewey Roden notched 17 points in the game, and Jake Engler added another 12 for VVS.
This three-headed attack proved efficient as all seven Red Devils who saw action found the basket at some point during the game.
For Norwich, they will most likely see a drop in their state ranking, falling from their fourth ranked position when the next rankings are released in approximately a week's time. The question remains how far they will drop.
Next up for Norwich (7-1 overall, 5-0 league) as we head into the holiday weekend, they will get some time off to regroup before returning to action on Friday, Dec. 30, when they travel to Union-Endicott to play at 1:30 p.m.
