S-E wrestling drops two hard fought losses due to forfeited weights

MOUNT MARKHAM – The Sherburne-Earlville varsity wrestling team has dropped two matches recently with tough matchup against Mount Markham earlier in the month, and most recently a loss to Adirondack by a score of 47-31.
• Mount Markham: The Mount Markham matchup went against S-E on Dec. 13, by a score of 39-36 for a Mount Markham win.
With wrestling starting at 145 pounds, it was S-E's Keith Rood who pinned his opponent in just 2:51. Rood's win was followed by pins from Jordon Zimmerman (152), Ethan Eldred (160) and Bailey Walzer (170) – the Marauders took an early 24-0 lead.
That is when Mount Markham made their move, they successfully picked up a 4-2 decision over Caleb Hill (182), and a pin over Alex Thompson (195) before S-E’s Tanner Campbell (220) pinned his opponent in :58 to put S-E up 30-9.
Mount Markham earned another win at pinned again at 285 pounds, before picking up a forfeit at 99, 113, 120 and a pin at 126 pounds.
With a depleted roster and a final forfeit from S-E at 132 pounds, the final score was drawn to 36-39 in favor of Mount Markham.
• Adirondack: Adirondack visited Sherburne-Earlville for a CSC Divisional dual meet on Dec. 21, where forfeits again played the spoiler for S-E as they fell to Adirondack 47-31.
With the dual meet beginning at 106 pounds, three forfeits and a pin ensued burying S-E down 24-0 early. Already down 24-0, S-E struggled through the next two matches with a technical fall at 132 pounds and another pin in favor of Adirondack at 145 – putting S-E down 41-0.
That is when the Marauders ripped off five straight wins on the night, as S-E's veteran wrestlers seemed to take over the show.
S-E's Hunter Zybineski (152) picked up a 9-4 decision victory, followed by Ethan Eldred (160) who also won by decision at 10-0. Marauder Bailey Walzer (170) pinned his opponent in 5:23, followed by another pin from Alex Thompson (182) who pinned his opponent in :48 – Caleb Hill (195) picked up six points via forfeit.
To close out the wins for S-E during their rally, Tanner Campbell (220) – and last week's Athlete of the Week on CNYwrestling.com – pinned his opponent in just 1:17.
S-E's Walter Keihn (285) ran into the defending NYS Champion Andrew Tanner, Klein managed an early score taking the lead with a take down before being pinned at just 1:12 into the match.
Additionally, Unadilla Valley's Morgan Lakin (132) wrestled along with the Marauders and won his match 4-2.
“Morgan is the only member of Unadilla Valleys wrestling team, Coach Ben Mumbulo drives Morgan to our practice every day, and they will be traveling with us throughout this season,” said S-E wrestling coach Brian Hicks. “They both are great additions to our wrestling team. A great crowd showed up last night along with the S-E Pee Wees and some former S-E Wrestlers, thank you all for your continued support. We are on our way back to the top.”
Next up for Sherburne-Earlville (0-2 overall) they will be looking for that first win on the season when they head to Chittenango later on this evening, Dec. 23, at 5 p.m.
