County Basketball: Norwich and B-G girls remain undefeated over holiday weekend

CHENANGO COUNTY
• Norwich girls varsity basketball program has marched their way to an unblemished 4-0 record on the 2016-2017 season, after defending their home court for a 53-41 win over Maine-Endwell.
The game on Friday, Dec. 23, saw the lady Tornado drop 20 second period points on the Spartans in order to take the commanding 27-19 lead.
It was smooth sailing for Norwich following the halftime break as they successfully outscored Maine-Endwell by two points in the third and fourth periods – claiming the 44-33 lead at the third, before taking the win at 53-41.
Leading Norwich to their fourth straight victory were two seniors, Meghan Komendarek and Makenzie Maynard. Komendarek snagged 22 points while going 6-7 from the line, while Maynard tacked on 16 addition points for the Tornado.
The Spartans were almost solely reliant on their leading scorer who had a fantastic day despite the loss – Monesha Talerico led both teams in scoring with her 24 points on the day, as she impressively went 9-10 from the charity stripe.
Next up for Norwich (4-0 overall) they will be competing in the Holiday Classic on Dec. 27 and 28.

• Bainbridge-Guilford recently trounced Chenango Forks this past Friday, when they cruised to an impressive 65-43 victory on the road.
The lady Bobcats have now climbed to a 5-0 record to start the season, after this most recent defeat over the Blue Devils this past Friday, Dec. 23.
B-G climbed to a 37-20 lead at the half after posting an impressive second period where they rained the two's with a couple of 3's tacked in – scoring 24 second period points.
Leading the lady Bobcats was Megan Palmatier and Abigail Selfridge – both doing most of their damage in the first half rampage of the Bobcats. Plamatier, doing her work inside grabbed a game high 20 points while also going 6-8 from the line. Selfridge trailed Palmatier with 13 points as she remained perfect from the line going 5-5.
Next up for Bainbridge-Guilford (5-0 overall) they will enjoy some time off before hosting Afton on Jan. 4, at 7:15 p.m.

• The Oxford boys varsity basketball team has slid into some losses during the past few outings with the most recent coming to Gilberstville Mount Upton this past Friday.
Oxford hosted GMU on Dec. 23, only to lose a close one at 47-39. The difference was the play in the first half as Oxford could only muster 16 total first half points – six in the first and 10 in the second – while GMU racked up 26 points total.
The Blackhawks would emerge with a newfound vigor in the second half, matching GMU in the third only to finally outscore them to end the game. However, this second half push of 23 points was not enough to overcome the early hole they had dug, as GMU kept pace with 21 of their own taking the win at 47-39.
Leading Oxford in the loss was Adhi Viswanthan who recorded 15 points throughout the game – while on the other side it was the duo of Ethan Butts with 22 points and Hunter Lockwood with 15 who did their damage against the Blackhawks, to ensure a GMU victory.
Next up for Oxford (2-4 overall) they will play later on this evening when they travel to Marathon on Dec. 27, at 7 p.m. the junior varsity will play in Marathon at 5:30 p.m.

• Unadilla Valley girls varsity basketball has slid to a defeated 0-4 record following their most recent loss to Unatego this past Thursday.
UV saw great competition when Unatego came to town only to lay down another loss for the Storm by a score of 47-38.
“We dug ourselves a huge hole and didn't have enough to get it any closer in the end. We were down 20 plus at one point,” said Unadilla Valley head coach Brandi Whitbeck. “We never quit and made some good plays when it counted.”
UV did in fact get out to a sluggish first half where they could only manage five points of scoring in each of the first two periods. Down 26-10 at the half, UV battled back into the game – eventually posting an impressive 18 point fourth period.
The lady Storm were led in scoring by Brooke Brown and Julia Oglesby who netted 12 and 10 points respectively. Notably, Julia Oglesby recored 10 rebounds in her efforts to coupe with the 10 points scored.
Up next for Unadilla Valley (0-4 overall) they will play next in the Unadilla Valley Holiday Tournament on Thursday, Dec. 29, where they will be faced off against Gilbertsville- Mt. Upton in the first round.

The UV boys wasted no time finding the net as they climbed to a 36 point first half, only to enjoy the lead while dropping the additional 24 points in the second half of play.
Unatego was not able to keep pace with the Storm, as Unatego was simply worn down as the game went on. Unatego managed to score 25 first half points before completely falling off in the second half – scoring 14 points in the third and a mere four to close out the game.
UV was led in scoring by Dante Dye who grabbed a team high 22 points, while also securing five steals and seven assists. Dye was closely followed by Andrew Jackson who netted 21 points on the night to go along with his impressive 13 steals and 13 rebounds – for his triple double on the night.
Up next for Unadilla Valley (3-2 overall, 2-0 league), they will play Sherburne-Earlville this coming Thursday, Dec. 29, at 6:15 p.m. in the Unadilla Valley Holiday Tournament. Oneonta will play Vestal at 4:30 p.m. in the same tournament.
