Chenango County participates in statewide DWI crackdown
CHENANGO COUNTY- During this holiday season, Chenango County's law enforcement agencies will be participating in a special statewide STOP-DWI crackdown that will be effective from Dec. 27, until January 2, 2017.
The Chenango County Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, Lawrence Wilcox announced “While we spend this Holiday Season celebrating with family and friends and looking forward to the blessings of a New Year, local Law Enforcement across the State will take the roads and extend their efforts to crackdown on impaired driving, prevent injuries and save lives”.
In addition, past research has shown that high visibility of law enforcement can reduce drunk driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent. Sobriety checkpoints play an important key in raising awareness about the growing issue of driving while impaired.
“While STOP-DWI efforts across New York State have led to significant reductions in alcohol and drug related fatalities, still too many lives are being lost because of crashes caused by drunks or impaired driving. In December of 2015 a result of 840 deaths were connected to drunk driving accidents. Over a five year period that total is almost 4,000 unnecessary and tragic deaths” said Wilcox.
The STOP-DWI Holiday Season crack down is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by the New York State STOP-DWI Association with additional funding from the governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and implemented by the STOP-DWI Foundation. A long with the foundation, a new mobile app “Have A Plan” can be available as a free download for many smart phones.
