County basketball roundup
CHENANGO COUNTY – Multiple games were played during the week, as well as games that were either cancelled or rescheduled due to inclement weather. Below is a rundown of what happened during the week in regards to boys and girls varsity basketball in the county.
Bainbridge-Guilford: The girls of the Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats remained undefeated through the week and are now ranked seventh in the state for Class C teams as of Dec. 28, according to the New York Sportswriters Association.
The lady Bobcats most recently defeated Hancock in the finals of their home tournament on Dec. 29, – the Kazalski tournament – by a score of 41-35. This win takes the girls to 7-0 on the season where they will next face off against Afton at home on Jan. 4, 2017.

Bainbridge-Guilford: The B-G boys varsity team will be playing in the consolation game of the OESJ Tournament after falling to Herkimer by a score of 56-49. The loss comes off an early Herkimer explosion of scoring as they led B-G 38-24 at the half.
Due to inclement weather the championship and consolation games were postponed in the tournament and will be played later on this evening Dec. 30, weather permitting.

Sherburne-Earlville: The S-E boys varsity team suffered a loss to Cazenovia earlier by a score of 55-37. The loss came at home S-E on Dec. 22, as a slow first period – only scoring three points – set S-E in a hole that could not be recovered from. Next up for the S-E boys they will travel to Unadilla Valley later on this evening, Dec. 30.

Sherburne-Earlville: The S-E girls earned a road win when they defeated Hamilton by a score of 50-34 on Dec. 29. The road win came after a stout Marauder defense held Hamilton in check for most of the game – scoring single digits in the first three quarters. The S-E girls currently hold a record of 5-3 overall and will head to Unadilla Valley later on this evening, Dec. 30.

Unadilla Valley: The Unadilla Valley Storm girls varsity basketball team earned their first win of the season when they defeated Gilbertsville-Mt Upton on Dec. 29, by a score of 54-25.
“We finally got a win. Really slow getting out of gate but came out with a great third quarter,” said Unadilla Valley head coach Brandi Whitbeck. “Everyone played very well.Julia Oglesby, Megan Winton and Kirsten white all had 5 steals.
The UV girls claimed the win in the first round of the UV Holiday Tournament due to their ability to get their offense rolling while staving off GMU for much of the game – scoring 18 back to back to close out the game.
Unadilla Valley will now play in the championship game later on this evening at home. Unadilla Valley holds a 1-4 record and will play Sherburne-Earlville at 5 p.m.

Unadilla Valley: The UV boys dropped their first round game to Sherburne-Earlville in their Holiday Tournament by a score of 69-58.
The loss for UV will jettison them to the consolation game to be played later on on Dec. 30. Despite posting regular double digit scores it was an early push from S-E – 21 point first period – which allowed enough cushion for the Marauder win. S-E advances to the finals to be played later on this evening in New Berlin.

Oxford: The Blackhawk boys traveled to Marathon on Dec. 27, where they subsequently earned a 53-41 win over Marathon. The road win for Oxford came due to their prolific offense which scored double digits for the first three periods of play, while the defense shut down Marathon in the later half of the game. Next up for Oxford is a home game against Laurens on January, 3, 2017 at 7:15 p.m.

Oxford: The Blackhawk girls suffered a 47-21 loss to the Greene Trojans in the first round of the Greene Holiday tournament on Dec. 28. The win for Greene came through a defense that held Oxford to just four points a period for the first three periods. This allowed the Trojan offense to get rolling enough to clinch the first round win. The tournament consolation game which Oxford will play in, as well as the championship game which Greene will play in were postponed due to the inclement weather on Dec. 29. Further results will be reported when the information becomes available.
