S-E completes the sweep, boys defeat Vestal in UV Holiday Tournament
NEW BERLIN – The Sherburne-Earlville boys varsity basketball team traveled over the hill to Unadilla Valley high school for their championship matchup where they subsequently handed Vestal a five point loss at 57-52.
The Friday evening, Dec. 30, matchup between the Marauders and the Golden Bears of Vestal came to fruition after Vestal defeated Oneonta and Sherburne-Earlville defeated Unadilla Valley in the first round of the four team tournament.
With S-E leading by just three points at the half – 29-26 – the Marauders fell somewhat flat in the third to allow a mere one point game to materialize heading into the fourth and final period of play.
Up by one point at 39-38, S-E proceeded to rally in the fourth to stave off any hope of a comeback from Vestal – as the Marauders solidified their championship win by dropping 18 fourth period points. S-E was led in scoring in the game by Matt Hull who netted 15 points in the game while also going 4-4 from the line to help gain the late win. The Marauders would see three other athletes go into the double digit column for scoring as Sam Tuttle grabbed 13 points, Dawson Lagoe snagged 11 points, and Lane Hunter hit two three-pointers in the fourth to bring his total to 10 total points in the game.
Sherburne-Earlville will next see action on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 7 p.m. when they head to Holland-Patent.
Winning the consolation game of the Unadilla Valley Holiday tournament was Oneonta, who defeated Unadilla Valley by a score of 84-52.
In the win for Oneonta, taking third in the tournament, the Yellowjackets enjoyed three athletes hit the 30 point scoring range – Graham Wooden with 27 points, Tanner Beang with 24 points, and Teddy McGraw with 20 points.
In the loss for the Storm, taking fourth in the tournament, Andrew Jackson was the lone UV player to hit double digit scoring as Jackson racked up 25 points.
Following the tournaments completion, the Tournament All-Star team and MVP were announced as the following: Conor Harding Vestal, Richie Tompkins Vestal, Andrew Jackson Unadilla Valley, Sam Tuttle S-E, Graham Wooden Oneonta, with Sherburne-Earlville's Matt Hull being named the MVP.
Next up for Unadilla Valley, they will head to Delhi on Friday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m.
