Lady Marauders champions of the 2016 UV Holiday Tournament
NEW BERLIN – The Sherburne-Earlville girls varsity basketball team has now moved to an impressive 7-3 record as they enter the new year, after defeating the home team, Unadilla Valley in the championship game of the Unadilla Valley Holiday Tournament this past Friday, by a score of 57-44.
The solid game featured two squads play a fantastic first two periods, with a tied game at the half, as both the Storm and Marauders knotted it up at 22.
It was then that the Storm seemed to simply unravel in the third period, as S-E racked up their scoring to gain a game high 26 points scored in the period, while UV was dwarfed in comparison in the scoring column – scoring just six points.
“We played well three out of four of the quarters but dug a hole in the third,” said Unadilla Valley head coach Brandi Whitbeck.
This 20 point slide for UV in the third period would crush all hopes of a home championship – although a fourth quarter 16 point rally did occur – S-E used this cushion to snag the championship win grabbing 10 additional points in the fourth to close out the deal with a 57-44 win on Dec. 30.
Leading UV in the championship game was Shelby Meade with 15 points, followed by Julia Oglesby with 14 points. S-E was led to their championship win by Tessa Cole and Lexi Elderkin, who scored 17 and 16 points respectively.
Up next for Sherburne-Earlville (7-3 overall) they will be home next against Sauquoit Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 7 p.m. Unadilla Valley (1-5 overall) will be home as well for their next matchup against Edmeston on Wednesday, Jan. 4, at 7:15 p.m.
Notably, Hamilton defeated GMU in the consolation game of the tournament; while Julia Oglesby UV, Meegan White UV, Tessa Cole S-E, Olivia Dow Hamilton, and Marena Zaczak were all named to the all-tournament team while Lexi Elderkin of S-E was named the tournament MVP.
