Greene man snagged by troopers after allegedly fleeing DWI scene

GREENE — Shortly before 1 a.m. on January 23, 2017, New York State Police from Greene responded to a Chenango County 911 report of a one vehicle crash on County Road 2 near Echo Lake Road in the Town of Greene.
Upon arriving, troopers were advised by the fire department personnel that the driver of the vehicle had fled the scene on foot into the woods. An investigation revealed that the driver was Alexander D. Drost, age 23, of Greene.
In an effort to locate Drost, Troopers checked his home on Genesee Street, but were unable to make contact with the driver.
Hours later, another 911 call reported that a man had knocked on the door to a home at 1112 County Road 2 asking for help “because he was cold.” Upon further investigation, troopers state that Drost was this man.
It was during a foot check of the surrounding area that troopers found the suspect sheltered in the cab of a large backhoe that had been parked in a nearby field.
At about 5 a.m. Monday, Drost was finally arrested for the misdemeanor of driving while intoxicated, the felony of aggravated unlicensed operation in the first degree and several traffic violations.
Public records indicate that Monday’s incident wasn’t the first DWI related run-in between Drost and State Troopers. Drost’s driver’s licence is currently invalid stemming from a string of incidents occurring in at least two neghboring counties.
In the town of Oneonta during January of 2014, Drost was charged with DWI, marijuana possession, and open container following a traffic stop on Interstate 88. Drost was also charged with felony criminal possession of a loaded weapon in that 2014 incident.
In February of 2016, Drost was brought up on driving while ability impaired by alcohol and other non-moving violations in the town Eaton by Madison County Sheriff’s deputies.
As for his current charges, Drost was arraigned in the Town of Smithville Court and was remanded to the Chenango county Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 property bond, and is expected to appear at a later date to answer to the charges.
He is presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.
