FIRST Robotics Team 145 kicks-off 2017 season
CHENANGO COUNTY – Chenango County FIRST Robotics Team 145 officially kicked-off its 2017 competitive season on January 7 as the team learned the details behind this year's challenge: FIRST STEAMWORKS, which focuses on an era when technology relied on steam power to prepare airships for a long distance race.
The game reveal was streamed live to all FIRST teams in the early hours on Saturday, January 7, and it's reported that enthusiasm levels were high among those on Team 145 as they watched this year's challenge unfold on the screen.
“Students and mentors alike were in awe as the details of the game became clear with the teams’ collective minds spinning, each wondering to themselves what they could build over the next six weeks to meet the challenges presented,” states a press release from Team 145.
For the competition, each three-team alliance will score points and prepare to take flight by building steam pressure, gathering materials to start the rotors, and boarding robots onto their airships. The club with the highest score at the end of the match is then deemed best prepared for the race and is recognized as winner.
As the live-stream ended, students on Team 145 gathered in small groups to brainstorm on how to create a robot that will succeed at the Regional Competition in Troy, N.Y., and hopefully take them to the Championships in St. Louis, Mo.
“The FIRST team would like to thank The Greater Norwich Foundation, The Otis Thompson Foundation, the Anna L. Mabey Foundation, the Peptis Foundation, the American Legion, NY Tech Valley, and a number of individual donors who make it possible for the team's members to continue on this journey of experiential learning,” said a representative from Team 145.
Team 145 added that the group as a whole is looking forward to the challenging opportunity this year and will keep the public posted on their progress as they prepare to compete at the Tech Valley Regional event in March at Renseelaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy.
