Lady Blackhawk bowlers continues to impress in 2017
DEPOSIT – Following delays and rescheduling due to inclement weather at the beginning of last week – the Oxford girls varsity bowling teams exploded for two solid matches on the lanes – while the boys proved competent by grabbing a tie before being outdone in Friday's matchup.
Taking on Deposit on Jan. 26, due to a rescheduling from Jan. 23, the Oxford girls snagged a solid 4-0 win, while taking the total pin-count win at 2,234-1,264.
The lady Blackhawk's Jourdan Pinney led the way for her squad – as the only female bowler to hit a 200 game – as Pinney snagged the game high with a solid third game at 204. Pinney would also secure the series high with her 540 series this past Thursday. Tying for the third highest game for Oxford – Pinney snagged a 192 game in the second – was Savannah Beech and Erin Howard – each of who battled it out in the third game to finish with a 168.
On the Deposit side, they would be swept away in essentially all facets of the contest, boasting just four bowlers – they would see their game and series high go to Carolynn Struble. Struble claimed the game high in the third with a 159, en route to her series high of 419.
On the boys, the matchup would come down to just 12 pins – as Oxford and Deposit would see a game tie at 2-2. This tie saw the Blackhawks be outscored in the total pin-count when Deposit managed to hit 2,275 compared to Oxford's 2,263 – a truly crushing loss.
Leading the way for Oxford was Phil Smith who hit all three games of his into the 200 range. Smith finished with the game and series high – rolling games of 214, 210, and 202 for a series high of 626. Corey Turner would take the second place series high for his team with a 465 series.
On the Deposit team, they would see a more balanced approach to the matchup on Thursday, however, it still remained a one man show essentially – although a closer team race. Kenny Macumber hit two games of 181, and 180 to start the series taking the high game at 181 in the first – as he rolled his way to a solid 511 series. Jacob Stanton trailed Macumber with a 471 series.
OXFORD – Following the road matchup, Oxford hosted a home match with Greene, to which the Trojans and Blackhawks split the lanes.
Taking the win for Oxford was once again the girls squad – as they cruised to another 4-0 victory. While the boys slid to a 3-1 loss to the Trojans. With this 4-0 win for the Oxford girls they now boast a fantastic overall record of 40-4; while the boys drop to a record of 25-19 on the season.
Jourdan Pinney and Erin Howard were locked into a battle for the top spot in their win – with Howard prevailing this time around. Howard fell one pin shy of a 200 game as she rolled a 199 in the first game for the game high. Howard would also snag the series high over Pinney this time around when she managed a 525 series (199, 168, 159) compared to Pinney (182, 175, 161) for a 518 series.
The Oxford girls would complete the wash with a 2,209 total pin-cunt compared to the lady Trojans who managed just 1,754 on the day.
Greene, although taking the 0-4 team loss, saw essentially saw a four-way battle with Courtney Pratt prevailing when all was said and done. Pratt recorded a solid day – taking the series high (119, 130, 141 for a 390. Pratt just barely edged out three of her teammates including Maddy Pickard who hit the game high in the first game (170, 116, 85– 371); Kayli Willes (134, 121, 114– 369); and Vicki Fleury (104, 96, 127– 327).
On the boys side, the Trojans took advantage of the the Blackhawks as they held fast to their ways to claim the 3-1 victory with a total pin-count of 2,615-2,495.
In the win for Greene, the battle between their top three bowlers was a fabulous one as Jakob Funnell edged out Brandyn Scott for the series win by just one pin. This feat happened when Funnell hit a third game of 211 to nearly steal the game high and and secure the series (159, 149, 211– 555); compared to Scott (159, 203, 192– 554), and Zach Westover who brought up a solid third (151, 196, 185– 532). Greene saw one other bowler hit the 200 range, as Michael Willard snagged the game high in the final game with his 212.
Oxford, enjoyed some solid individual bowling, despite the loss this past Friday. Corey Turner again showed his expertise on the lanes when he hit a 625 series – which came on the back of his 226 first game, followed up by a 208 and a 191 game in the second and third respectively.
Already with the game and series claimed by Turner – Oxford did see one other 200 bowler in Harry Oliver who hit a 202 in the third game (170,171, 202– 543).
Next up for Oxford boys and girls bowling they will travel to Bainbridge-Guilford on Monday, Jan. 30, at 3:45 p.m. The Trojans will enjoy some time off on Monday, before they take to the lanes once again on Tuesday, Feb. 1, when they travel to Deposit for a match at 3:45 p.m.
