Greene Trojans stomp UV back to .500 on senior night
GREENE – Coming into the Greene gymnasium on Wednesday, the Unadilla Valley boys basketball team were hot off a 76-50 win over Harpursville – and were hoping to reach an even 9-9 record in Greene. The Trojans, holding their senior night in high esteem made other plans, as they defended their home court to the tune of a 62-44 win.
Although record-wise on the season, Greene was outmatched, they overcame their potential woes one might expect in the game.
Prior to the start of the game on Feb. 8, Greene recognized their six graduating seniors: Luke Erickson, Breven Gilmore, Blake Lane, Andrew Brigham, Ryan Lohsen, and Will Williams.
Greene was able to use a deep roster to upset the visiting Storm – as all 10 of the 11 Trojan players scored on the night – while the defense was drastically able to limit Unadilla Valley's offense.
The Trojans valiantly sliced into the Storm for a 14-8 first period score. Gaining momentum from the first period into the second was senior Breven Gilmore, who after hitting an early three, added two more long-range shots to his night's resume for a nine point first half. This nine points coupled with scores from five other Trojans were enough for Greene to edge out a UV team that also seemed to be finding their feet, for a second period score of 15-13 – as the game entered halftime at a 29-21 score.
UV all-star, Andrew Jackson was limited by the Trojan defense to just six first half points. However, that is when UV got crafty. With Jackson being defended well, UV proved to have some depth as well when the third period rolled around – raining down 17 Storm points in the third period.
Senior Will Williams from Greene stepped up in an attempt to help keep pace on the night – scoring eight of his team leading 19 points – draining two long balls in the process. Greene was outscored 17-16, as the final eight minutes rolled around with the Trojans up 45-38.
Six points, that is all that the visiting Storm could manage when pressured down the stretch by the swarming Trojans. This six points obviously failed to carry UV to a win on the road – as Williams of Greene capped off a fine performance in the fourth (scoring six), with five other teammates tossing in scores as well for a game high 17 points.
UV's Jackson would finish with his respective team high in scoring with 10 points, while Geoff Keach tossed in 10 points of his own in the loss.
14, 15, 16, and finally 17 points, that is the progression that Greene was able to produce on senior night in the scoring column. A progression that they hope will continue as they will now enter into the MAC league tournament.
Greene (6-5 league, seventh MAC) is slated for a road game next, where they will play Unatego (3-8 league, ninth MAC) on Feb. 14, at 7:15 p.m. Unadilla Valley (7-4 league, fourth MAC) will travel to face off against Sidney (10-0 league, first MAC), on Feb. 14, at 7:15 p.m.
