SHERBURNE- On senior night, this past Friday, the lady Marauders upended the Eagles from New York Mills by a score of 53-28.
Sherburne-Earlville practically blew their opposition off the court by scoring 17 points in the first quarter, all while holding the Eagles to six points in the opening quarter. In fact, the rolling Marauder offense matched the Eagles scoring output for the half in just the first quarter.
Despite their opening dominance, S-E would not see another dominating quarter until the third period of play as they equaled the Eagles in offensive production as both teams scored 11 points in the second quarter of action.
It would be the stellar play of McKenzie Keator who tried to guide the Eagles to a more manageable game when she scored seven of her nine points in the second period. As the final buzzer of the first half sounded, Sherburne-Earlville maintained a 28-17 lead.
What followed in the second half of action once again showed the dynamic offense and defense of the Marauders scoring 15 points in the third quarter, while the defensive effort proved helpful by once again keeping the Eagles from reaching double-digit scoring in a quarter.
With the score 43-24 heading into the game’s final quarter of play. The fourth quarter proved to hold the most impressive defensive effort of the game for the Marauders, as they held New York Mills to only four points in the fourth quarter. S-E put up another eleven points as the Marauder girls cruised to the home victory.
Kaitlyn Furner put up 17 points in the contest – leading the Marauders in scoring and just missing a double-double by pulling down nine rebounds. Miranda recorded a double-double for S-E by corralling 10 rebounds and scoring 12 points, teammate Lexi Elderkin pitched in 15 points while pick-pocketing four Spartans to record four steals. Despite only scoring two points, Shay Franklin led the S-E defensive effort by picking off the Spartans for five steals.
Abbey Copperwheat led Unatego with 10 points in the loss.
The Marauders (12-7 overall) return to action as they travel to Canastota on February 14, with game time scheduled for 7 p.m.
Following this game on Feb. 10, the Marauders await their first Section III match-up as the Section III girl's basketball committee will be determining seeding on Wednesday February 15.
