OTEGO- The lady Spartans basketball team from Unatego defended their home court against the girls from Unadilla Valley eventually cruising to a 52-26 victory in the first round of the MAC league tournament on Friday.
The Spartans dominated in the first half, with offensive explosions of 14 and 18 points in the first and second quarters, respectively. Meanwhile, the visiting Storm had issues with getting their offensive unit started only scoring 11 points over the first 16 minutes.
However, UV’s problem wasn’t just their offensive woes, their defense had to stop Unatego’s Hezel Haehnel who scored 14 of her game high 16 points in the first-half alone. With the first half ending in a 32-11 advantage for the Spartans, the Storm needed some energy to start the second half.
The Storm’s defense improved only allowing 20 points from the Spartans – eight in the third quarter and 12 in the fourth quarter. The Storm’s offensive unit, while still trying to get past a difficult Spartans defense managed to score 13 points in the half – outscoring their first half point total by two.
Kirsten White led Unadilla Valley with five points. And the aforementioned Hezel Haehnel led the Spartans with 16 points. The Storm return to the court when they travel to Walton on February 15, with tip-off scheduled for 7:15 p.m. for the second round of the MAC league tournament.
