Chenango Relay for Life set to relocate to Norwich's East Park
NORWICH – As the 21st Relay for Life of Chenango County slowly approaches, the Relay committee have set their sights on bringing the event 'back-to-basics,' but with one major modification.
This summer, Relay for Life will take to East Park in the City of Norwich for the first time ever – instead of the old site of the Chenango County Fairgrounds.
According to Marie DeSarro of Relay for Life of Chenango County's Public Relations, the change was made in an effort to bring more exposure to the event while staying true to its primary purpose.
“Over the last 21 years, the event has gotten so big and there has been so much going on that we just want to downsize a little bit this year and remember why we're here: to raise money, raise awareness, and walk all night long,” said DeSarro.
“One thing people don't necessarily realize about Relay is that anyone can come down and walk and raise awareness whether they are registered or not,” said DeSarro. “At the fairgrounds we were a little hidden, but we're hoping in downtown Norwich there will be more a little more exposure and a little more participants.”
At its kick-off meeting Tuesday, Feb. 14 in the Community Room at SUNY Morrisville Norwich Extension, Relay for Life of Chenango County announced some of the changes that will take effect this year, as well as this year's goals and theme: back-to-basics.
Among the goals of this year's Relay, according to DeSarro, are: registering 40 teams; registering 400 participants; registering 150 survivors; selling 1,500 luminarias; and fundraising $130,000 total.
In spite of the back-to-basics theme, however, there are a number of changes set to take place at this year's Relay for Life.
“One challenge we had in changing the location was deciding where we would have our Survivor's Dinner,” said DeSarro. “But the Norwich Fire Department has graciously offered to host the Dinner for us, and it's right by East Park so it really couldn't have worked any better.”
Another change this year is the Relay for Life of Chenango County committee will be working with a new partner from the American Cancer Society.
Heather Brewster, Community Manager for Relay for Life at the American Cancer Society, will be working with the Relay for Life of Chenango County team this year, which DeSarro says is a welcomed change given Brewster's close proximity in Johnson City.
DeSarro says that Brewster will also be a good contact for people in the area who are interested in learning about the many local programs that the American Cancer Society offers.
Brewster can be contacted via email at heather.brewster@cancer.org or by phone at (607) 621-5182.
The next meeting for Relay for Life of Chenango County will take place on Tuesday, March 31 at 5:30 p.m. in the Community Room at SUNY Morrisville Norwich Extension, and DeSarro says that given the changes that will take place this year, all team captains and those interested in participating are strongly encouraged to attend.
“Usually we ask that only new team captains attend this particular meeting, but we'd like to break all the changes down into really specific details and we hope that all captains plan to attend,” said DeSarro.
