ELMIRA – The Bainbridge-Guilford boy’s varsity basketball team were eliminated from the Section IV Class C playoffs at the hands of a vivacious Elmira Notre Dame team last Wednesday, Feb. 22.
Right out of the gates the bobcat offense was just not there. In the opening quarter, B-G scored just four points, in contrast to giving up 12 on the other end of the court.
END was able to further extend their lead in the second quarter, as their offense turned into high gear, erupting for 20 points, while holding the Bobcats to 10 points in the quarter. This allowed Notre Dame to enter the interval with an 18-point lead.
Things didn’t get any better for the B-G boys in the second half. Their defense struggled to contain the potent Notre Dame offense, which added another 19-points to their total in the third quarter, and a further 12 in the final eight minutes to comfortably close out the 63-36 victory.
Following the defeat, B-G first-year head coach Brad Aldrich Sr. noted a number of factors which all contributed to his side’s loss.
“Elmira Notre Dame was very quick and (played) aggressive man to man defense. (We) had not seen much of that lately, and didn’t handle it well,” said Aldrich. “They out hustled us on the boards, and shot the ball well from the three-point line also.”
While the loss eliminated the Bobcats from playoff contention, it also marked the end of an era for B-G seniors Tyler Johnson, Zach Ouimet, Sean Jones and Kyle Rideout. Aldrich Sr. spoke warmly of the core four, as well as his team in general.
“(We’re) really going to miss our seniors. All played a lot of minutes this year,” said Aldrich. “Tyler and Zach’s presence inside was very key in many games. Sean did everything for us, from handling pressure on the ball to rebounding inside, and was our second leading scorer. Kyle did a great job off the bench, helping on the point and giving us timely points. They combined for 53 percent of our scoring this year. (It’s) going to be tough to replace all that next year. I personally enjoyed working with all of them, and also the whole team. They made my first year at B-G a good experience.”
The Bobcats will be hoping to build on this loss, and an 11-10 season overall, when next year rolls around.
