SHERBURNE – A multi-sport star from Sherburne-Earlville High School recently committed to further both his football and academic career at St. John Fisher University, in Rochester.
“I liked what I saw when I went up and watched a game during the season, and I loved the campus. My overnight visit sealed the deal. The coaches and players definitely made me feel at home,” said S-E senior Matt Hull of his choice of St. John Fisher over other possible school's such as Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, and SUNY Cortland.
Hull was a renowned player on the Marauder varsity football and basketball teams. Hull proved to be a threat on both the offense and defense for the S-E football team. He was the starting tailback, as well as a starting linebacker for the Marauders.
Over his three-year career on the varsity football team, he amassed 2,170 total yards rushing, and scored 26 touchdowns. In addition, Hull also accounted for 412 yards, and four more touchdowns on the receiving end. His best year offensively came during his junior year, the 2015 season, where he rushed for 893 total yards, and seven touchdowns. As a senior Hull suffered an injury that cut his campaign short – he finished with 672 yards rushing in five games, adding in an astounding 10 rushing touchdowns.
“Coming back from my hand injury, I went to Colgate a lot, and played with one hand and worked on my jump-shot a lot. Which I think definitely helped with the season (S-E Basketball 2016-2017),” said Hull of his football injury.
Defensively, Hull recorded 96 solo tackles, and assisted on 56 more tackles throughout his time with the Marauders. The 2015 season was also a career year for Hull defensively, as he notched 71 total tackles, two sacks and four interceptions.
At St. John Fisher, Hull noted that he will be most likely playing at the slot receiver position.
“Football teaches you (and) helps you with being a student, good work ethic, and it forces you to have good time management,” added Hull on how football has and will continue to help now at the collegiate level.
Marauder varsity football head coach Ed Holmquist was full of praise for Hull, saying, “As a coach, you don’t often get the opportunity to coach a player like Matt. His special athleticism was not made overnight. He has great support from family, friends and coaches from all levels. His incredible dedication to the sport and his drive in the classroom is a great example for any young player to follow.”
Hull is an honors student, who is ranked 23rd in the graduating class of S-E High School for the 2016-2017 year – holding a 90 overall G.P.A.
“I know he will excel and do a tremendous job at St. John Fisher. We were lucky as coaches to have had the honor to have coached him,” said Holmquist.
