Oxford Winter Farmers’ Market to host Community Seed Swap

OXFORD – Oxford Winter Farmers' Market is hosting their annual Community Seed Swap on Saturday, March 4, for aspiring gardeners to share their spare seeds with one another while stocking-up on produce, baked goods, kitchen staples, and other hand-crafted items.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Parish House Community Center of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Oxford, local farmer Mina Takahashi will be at the market sharing her knowledge of seed-saving practices. Packets, label forms, and supplies will be provided.
“Swapping seeds is an excellent way to save on seed cost, to find unusual varieties of heritage seeds–some saved for generations upon generations–to share knowledge and pick up tips from fellow gardeners, to help protect plant diversity, and to improve our food security,” Takahashi says. “As seed-saving advocate Vandana Shiva says, ‘The act of seed saving is such an important political act in this time. We get power by aligning ourselves with the forces of life…. Save seeds, have a community garden, create an exchange, do everything that it takes to protect and rejuvenate the seed.’”
For those without seeds to swap, free seed packets will be available offering new, unusual, and hardy seeds to our region.
Other features of the Oxford Market this weekend will include: Enough and a Little Bit More's freshly harvested Greens: Bok Choi, Endive, Spinach, Braising Greens (Asian/mustard greens), Pea Shoots, Mini-head Lettuce and Micro-greens (Arugula, Spicy and Mild). And from their root cellar - carrots, potatoes, turnips, Daikon radish, and kohlrabi.
Sunrise Farms will have banana, zucchini and pumpkin quick breads in addition to all their regular dairy staples of yogurt, milk, eggs, and cheese.
Dianne Lewis will have eggs and pies (baked and frozen), as well as her rich worm-castings fertilizer.
Lillian's Quinn will have her crumb cake on offer, but be sure to get there early–it goes fast!
And while shopping, attendees will have a chance to hear Allison Beckwith sing songs from the upcoming Oxford Drama Club's production of Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. Tickets will be available for the production to be held at the Oxford High School March 17-18.
Join your neighbors to celebrate the coming of spring by sharing seed, supporting local producers, and enjoying a “Local Lunch” prepared by Chef John and his BOCES students.
All events are free and open to the public.
