CANTON – Kyle Edwards, a former star Tornado basketball player, recently reached another major milestone in his athletic career, as he was named the Liberty League defensive player of the year, late this February.
Earlier in the season, Edwards, who plays with the St. Lawrence Saints, recorded his 1,000th career point. He has now followed that major achievement up by earning this prestigious accolade.
“I’m very proud to be the league’s defensive player of the year,” said Edwards. “I’ve always been taught that defense is all about effort and preparation. So it was awesome that other coaches recognized that on the court.”
On his way to helping the Saints earn a second straight NCAA Tournament title bid, Edwards, the two-year captain, led the Saints in steals, with 31. Edwards also prided himself in ranking second in defensive rebounds for the team, accounting for 109.
However, Edwards wasn’t just a threat on the defensive end of the court. He also led St. Lawrence in scoring during his senior campaign, averaging 16.8 points per game.
According to Edwards, coaches played a key role in pushing him to where he is today.
“The Norwich coaches provided all of the foundation as far as technique and team defense, but it was the St. Lawrence coaches that taught me how to study film and player tendencies, which helped a lot,” said Edwards.
Unfortunately, last Friday, March 3, St. Lawrence fell victim to St. John Fisher in the first round of the Division III NCAA Tournament, on a final score of 77-72, signaling the end of a storied career for Edwards.
“I just really want all of the coaches and fans of Norwich basketball to know how appreciative I am of all their support along the way,” said Edwards.
Upon graduation from St. Lawrence in May, Edwards said that he plans to attend graduate school, where he will study Physical Therapy.
