HERKIMER – April 3, signaled opening day for Chenango County baseball and softball teams. With the snow finally melted, and the fields prepared, it was time to play some ball.
The first test of the year for the Sherburne-Earlville varsity softball team came in the form of a visit to Herkimer High School. The Marauders fell victim to a potent Magicians offense, and lost on a final score of 15-0.
In what was a rough outing for S-E, they gave up 16 hits over six innings, committing five errors along the way.
The Marauders couldn’t get anything going on the offense either, as they mustered up just five hits throughout the course of the game.
“We had five errors. Those five errors occurred when they (Herkimer) had runners in scoring position,” said S-E Head coach Michelle Parker following her teams loss. “We struggled to find the mound, and my girls were nervous. It took us a while to get settled in.”
Miranda Wright was the bright spot of the Marauder offense in the defeat, as she went two-for-three on the day. Eliza Maruzic was a constant threat for Herkimer, as she went a perfect four-for-four at the plate, with two doubles and two RBI’s for her side in the victory.
S-E will be hoping to learn from this loss and for a reversal of fortunes when they play host to Sauquoit Valley next Wednesday, April 5, at 4:30 p.m.
