Indians rip one past Norwich as the Tornado drop season-opener

NORWICH – The Norwich boys varsity tennis team saw a bright sunny spring day unfold before their eyes as Monday evening looked to present some reasonable weather for their home opener against the visiting Owego Indians.
Nevertheless, this sunny spring day would not present itself with a positive outcome for the hopeful Tornado tennis players, as the team – led once again by longtime head coach John Stewart – dropped their season-opener to Owego by a tight score of 4-3.
The bright spot for the Tornado would prove to be its doubles play, where the team team downed Owego in two out of three possible outings. Contrary to the two team points scored by the doubles on Monday, April 3, Norwich managed to only claim one team point off its singles play – as the top three singles players fell to the vicious Indian attack.
Taking the sole point for Norwich – at fourth singles – was Joel Fazio who managed to win in straight sets at 6-2, and 6-0 over Owego’s Gary King.
Norwich’s remaining two points came by way of the first and second doubles teams – as the duo of Austin Benenati and Carson Maynard – at first doubles – easily defeated Nick Almy and Jim Grant of Owego at 6-3, and 6-0
Norwich’s Jahlil Jones and Zac Marsh earned Norwich’s final team point, when they found themselves locked into a heated match with Nick Corey and Ostap Juravich of – Norwich would win in three sets at 5-7, 6-2, and 6-0 – to grant the home home team a respectable out.
“We are a young team with new partners in doubles and kids that have never played singles. We played tough tonight, we just came up a little short,” said coach Stewart.
Owego grabbed their decisive points in the victory with three straight wins over the Tornado at first, second and third singles.
At first singles, Cole Paradies of Owego caught Norwich’s Josia Shaver in two sets – winning 6-1, and 6-2. Second singles saw Owego’s Ben Siemer overpower the likes of Zayn Harper to the tune of a 6-0, 6-0 defeat. Matt Giglio proved to give some resistance in his efforts at third singles, however, Owego’s Dominick Matarese would snag the win over Giglio in three sets at 4-6, 6-3, and 6-4.
Norwich (0-1 overall) will play next on Wednesday, April 5, at Susquehanna Valley at 4 p.m.
